A model that is surprising is the 4 TB HGST, in which only 2 of the 2, 557 units that were installed failed. They are followed by the 14 TB Toshiba model in which only 1 of 1, 220 drives failed, and the 6 TB Seagate, with a single hard drive failing out of the 1, 023 installed.
BackBlaze also notes that manufacturers such as Seagate and HGST have decreased their failure rate in the past three years, although Seagate has seen an increase in that failure rate in the past three quarters, which turns on alarms a bit. However, Seagate has managed to lower its failure rate the most, by 50% on average in three years.
On the other hand, Backblaze no longer uses 2TB or 3TB drives on its servers, and in the future, they will also migrate 4TB drives to larger hard drives.
