Water battery to fight explosive phones
Table of contents:
Surely most of you have already thought about the Galaxy Note 7 however, the truth is that it is not the only phone that has caught fire and / or exploded. Although that case responded to a serial problem, the truth is that similar cases have occurred in other brands. However, a curious solution could become a reality: water batteries.
Water instead of organic compounds
It is not the first to see that a smartphone has become so hot that it has reached the point of catching fire and exploding. The most significant case was the Galaxy Note 7 in 2016. Since then, many users have become more aware of the risks of a smartphone that gets too hot. Fortunately, the new water batteries could prevent such situations from recurring.
Today's smartphones use lithium ion batteries inside which have electrolytes that help move the ions between the electrodes. The problem is that those electrolytes are made from organic chemicals that, under certain conditions, can ignite.
Now, a team of researchers has published an article in the journal Joule describing a lithium-ion battery model that uses water instead of organic compounds, claiming that its water-based design generates the same amount of energy as its chemical equivalent. In addition, the interior electrodes have a coating that does not degrade with the use of a water-based electrolyte.
But there is a problem and that is that the life of this battery is limited to approximately 70 cycles, while current batteries have a much longer life, which is an important and obvious obstacle that must still be solved for these water batteries may begin to be used in smartphones and other devices.
