Apple has worked together with the Australian company Blackmagic Design to offer its users a high-performance external graphics solution, the Blackmagic eGPU that hides inside all the power of a Radeon RX 580.

Blackmagic eGPU is based on an all-in-one design, which means it is a closed box that comes with the graphics card already included. The built-in graphics card is an AMD Radeon 580 Pro with 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, it is a mid-range graphics card that will help MacBook pro users improve the performance of their computers in tasks that make heavy use of the GPU.

On the back of the Blackmagic eGPU we find two Thunderbolt 3 connections, the first is to connect to a Mac, while the second connects to the screen to send the image. Using the Thunderbolt 3 interface offers full 5K resolution. There is also a HDMI port that supports 4K resolution at 60Hz to improve compatibility. To all this is added a total of four USB 3.1 ports.

Tunderbolt 3 ports can provide up to 85 watts of current, enough to charge a 15-inch MacBook Pro and keep it running under the heaviest load. The Blackmagic eGPU is powered using a conventional power cable.

This Blackmagic eGPU will offer great improvements to Mac users who are dedicated to graphic editing and video editing. According to the company, DaVinci Resolve performs 5 times better on a 13-inch MacBook Pro with this eGPU. In the 15-inch version, the renders will be ready twice as fast. Final Cut Pro X does not yet support an external GPU, so testing was not possible.
