What is Windows 10 game mode

It is a native tool of Windows 10 and it is integrated in the Xbox application that automatically detects when we are playing and assigns more resources to the game in question, limiting the other applications in terms of CPU and RAM memory usage.

This is useful if for example we have many services running on our system or a large number of active applications in the background. What this mode does is limit the consumption of these applications to give these resources to the game. Surely the users who most notice it are those who have relatively limited hardware, for example, little RAM memory or a mechanical hard drive.

In short, Microsoft has wanted to make an operating system more attractive from the point of view of the players. Or as an attempt to assimilate a PC to a video game console.

Where is this mode integrated and where is its configuration

We will have two ways to access the Windows 10 game mode, or rather its configuration:

Using the Xbox app:

  • We go to " Start " and write Xbox. An application will appear in the search result. Let's go, click to access it. It is possible that if we have never accessed it, it will ask us to log in. For this we use a Microsoft account that we have.

In the right sidebar of this application we will have a series of icons. Many of them will be synchronized with the console if we have it. We will visualize our games, achievements, friends, etc.

The icon that interests us is the last one with the appearance of a configuration wheel. If we access it we will find part of the configuration of this application, but it does not tell us anything about the game mode.

In the " General " tab we will find settings fundamentally for the application. And in the " notifications " tab we can configure the notices that we want to be shown about this application and its tools.

If we want to access the system configuration about the game mode, what we will have to do is go to the " Captures " tab and click on the link below.

In this way we can access the configuration of this tool in the system.

Through the configuration panel

To get to this same screen we can also do it through the system configuration:

  • Click on Start and then on the system configuration wheel. Then we must go to the " Games " icon. In this way we will enter the same configuration screens as from the application.

Activate Windows 10 game mode

If we continue browsing the configuration options that we have previously opened, we will find in the list the option " Game mode"

If we agree, we will not find too much information as we might initially expect. This is precisely because of what we have commented in the updates. This tool has been increasingly simplified and currently all it tells us is that our team supports game mode.

What we are looking for, which is to activate or deactivate the game mode, we have not yet found. Well, that option will appear precisely when we start a game.

As we can see automatically Windows shows us information about this mode on the side of the screen. Specifically, it tells us to press a key combination to access it.

  • To open its utilities we must press the key combination " Windows + G ". This will open an options bar.

If we go to the right side we will see an icon with a crossed out power button. From it we will activate the game mode.

Not only can we use this option with games, it is also possible to use it with normal applications such as Word or Google Chrome. We will only have to press this key combination and choose " Yes, this is a game"

Game mode bar options

Through this bar we can perform different tasks. starting from left to right we find:

  • Shortcuts: at the end we find different shortcuts for the Xbox application, settings of the capture folder and the options window. This is the same one that we saw within the Xbox application. Screenshot: The icon with the camera is used to take screenshots of the game. Record screen: the next section is dedicated to recording the screen of our game. We can also activate the microphone. Live broadcast: the next section will be dedicated to streaming on the Mixer platform .

To deactivate the game mode we will have to press the button on the far right again.

If you want to know in more detail how to record the screen or capture it in Windows 10 go to our tutorial:

As you can see, it is a very simple tool once we know how to use it. In addition, it provides us with useful options such as capturing and connecting to our Xbox profile directly. Of course, do not expect this mode to work miracles on your PC by increasing the FPS you have. The hardware section is essential to achieve good results in games, this is only a small help.
