Do I need to update BIOS on my motherboard? As many of you know, the recently launched Ryzen 3000 processors, and given the high prices of the X570 boards, many users are betting on a B450 or X470 motherboard to mount their new CPU. However, these boards were released before the new processors, so to achieve compatibility with a 3rd generation Ryzen and make it work it is necessary to perform a BIOS update.

On some boards, specifically those that include USB BIOS Flashback , this update process does not require us to install any compatible CPU (Ryzen 2000/1000), but we can simply update it with a USB memory.

In this article we will tell you which are the boards compatible with this feature and how to carry out the update process. So if you want to run your Ryzen 3000 CPU on a B450, X370 or X470 board, without the need to first mount a Ryzen 2000 or 1000, come join us!

What is USB Bios Flashback and why is it necessary to use Ryzen 3000?

It is a functionality integrated into several motherboards that allows us to perform a BIOS update without having to access it, and without having to have a processor or RAM installed. This feature was mainly intended to offer a way to recover the BIOS in case of serious errors, and as a replacement for the Dual BIOS that offers us a secondary BIOS in case there is a problem.

And what does this have to do with Ryzen 3000 processors? Well, these new CPUs are fortunately compatible with all AM4 chipsets ( except some A320s, but that's not the case ), but since the motherboards with those chipsets are older than the Ryzen 3000 processors themselves, these do not support the new ones. CPUs natively, so after the release of new processors, motherboard manufacturers publish new BIOSes that enable this compatibility.

On a normal board, the only way to update the BIOS requires accessing it in the way we all know, for which we will need a functional computer, with a compatible CPU (we could not use a Ryzen 3000 in these previous generation chipsets), RAM memory and a graphics card (either dedicated or integrated). Hence the importance of the USB BIOS Flashback: motherboards with this feature can update their BIOS without any CPU installed, so we do not need to access the BIOS with a previous generation CPU, we simply must perform a simple process that we will teach you in this article.

Is it the same with Intel, or is it just an AMD "problem"?

Example of a B360 board released before 9th generation Intel CPUs. These processors are only supported from a specific BIOS version.

This need to update the BIOS to install a next-generation CPU on an older motherboard is not something “special” from AMD, since in Intel processors the same thing happens with (for example) the 9th generation on Z370, H370 motherboards, B360, etc.

However, this at AMD is much more common since the AM4 platform has already been more than 2 years of compatibility between (almost) all its motherboards and CPUs, while at Intel it is more normal to be forced to buy the latest chipsets to the latest CPUs.

A fundamental requirement to take advantage of this feature is to have a compatible board, we will cover this immediately, keep reading the article and you will discover it.

Compatible boards with USB Bios Flashback or Flash Bios Button

The one that we are going to detail is an exhaustive list of X470, X370 and B450 boards (of B350 there are none) that are compatible with the USB Bios Flashback. As you will see, the vast majority are from MSI, and unfortunately ASUS only includes it on the most expensive boards. There they go:

We invite you to leave all your doubts in the comments box (do not cut yourself, do we know that it can be a pretty messy issue?) And we hope that the article on how to update BIOS for AMD Ryzen 3000 processor has been helpful.
