How to upgrade to ubuntu 18.04 from different previous versions

Upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 or Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 18.04

Updating to Ubuntu 18.04 from the previous LTS version is really very simple, since we only need to enter a command in the terminal. The LTS versions are configured to jump between them, leaving out the regular versions. To make the updates we just have to open a terminal and enter the following command:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

After this we only have to let the system work, it is important not to turn off or restart the computer in the middle of the update.

Upgrade from Ubuntu 17.10 to Ubuntu 18.04

In this case the update is just as simple, although to make sure that nothing fails, it is better that we go to the "Software and updates" application and in the second tab check the option "Warn with Long Support updates or LTS". Once the changes are accepted, the update wizard should appear, if it does not, we can use the following command in the terminal:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Once again, we let the system work without interruptions.

Upgrade from previous versions

Updating to Ubuntu 18.04 from previous versions to Ubuntu 16.04 is somewhat more expensive and not recommended, since in these cases it is always preferable to do a new installation from scratch. Still it is possible to do the update with the following commands in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo update-manager -d

This will update the system to the next version, once it's done we update to Ubuntu 18.04 with the following command:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d
