Ubuntu 17.04 is the new version of the Canonical operating system that is about to arrive and many users will consider updating their system to this new version. That is why we have developed this tutorial in which we explain how to update to this new version from the previous ones.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 step by step

First of all it is convenient for us to have our base system well updated with all the packages in their latest version available in the repositories, for this we open a terminal and enter the following command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Update Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04

To update between the last two versions of this operating system is extremely simple, we just need to open a terminal and enter a command so that the system begins to download and install all the necessary packages. The only precaution is, as always, not to close the terminal or turn off the equipment before it finishes working.

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Upgrade Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 17.04

We have to make a parenthesis since this operating system has two types of very different versions and we should be very clear about it before going ahead in the tutorial.

  • Ubuntu LTS versions: LTS are the versions with extended support of this operating system, they are released every two years and Canonical offers support for them for a period of 5 years. These are the recommended versions for the majority of users. This type of version always follows the numbering 12.04, 14.04, 16.04, 18.04…
  • Regular versions of Ubuntu: they are versions released every 6 months and have only 6 months of support. They are all released between two LTS versions and are recommended for users who want the latest, even if it means more stability problems. Examples of these versions are 16.10, 17.04, 17.10, 18.10…

It will depend on us if we want to maintain the stability and guarantees of an LTS version or we want to make the leap from this to a regular version supported for only 9 months. Upgrading from the current LTS to a regular version of the operating system is somewhat more complex but also very easy for all users. First of all we have to follow the following steps:

  1. Open ' Software & Updates' Select the ' Updates ' tab Look for the ' Notify me of a new version of Ubuntu ' section In the drop-down menu select 'For any version'

Once these steps are done, it is time to update to Ubuntu 16.10, for this we write in a terminal:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Next we upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Here ends the tutorial, if you liked it, don't forget to share it with your friends on social networks to help us.
