One of the things that we always want to avoid at all costs is having to reinstall Windows 10 when an error appears that does not allow us to work properly. Or it doesn't even give us a chance to break into our desktop. In this tutorial we will see how to create a Windows 10 boot disk to recover our equipment from serious errors.

Using the boot drive we can start our computer and instead of starting on a system with errors, we can insert this drive and boot from it. This will provide us with different options to recover our system.

Create Windows 10 boot disk

To create a boot drive we can use a USB storage device.

A boot drive is very useful for when our operating system fails to start and we cannot enter or return to a previously performed restore point.

To see how to create a restore point visit this tutorial:

You must make the recovery unit in an operating system that does not present failures of this type. So you will have to use a computer in good condition and with the same architecture as yours (32 or 64 bits)

To create the boot drive we will perform the following steps:

  • We go to the beginning and write "create a repair unit" Click on the option marked at the top

  • A wizard will be opened for the creation of the recovery drive. If we activate the option that appears in the initial window, we will be creating a drive capable of reinstalling the entire operating system. We recommend leaving this option active, but we will need a USB of more than 8 GB. If we deactivate it, only 512 MB will be necessary. Before going to the next screen we will have to insert the USB device into the computer so that the assistant can detect it.

The program will start creating Windows 10 boot disk.

If, on a first attempt, the wizard shows that it was not possible to perform the drive, try it a second time and it should not give you any problems

After finishing the wizard, we will get the option to "Delete recovery partition". We will select it and give it to delete. This frees up the space that has been used on the hard drive to recover Windows 10.

To use this boot drive, we will need to boot the USB before the hard drive.

In order for the computer to start the USB device, you can visit our tutorial on:

Start boot disk

Now we just have to start our computer from USB and the automatic recovery wizard will start.

  • The first thing we must choose is the keyboard layout that we have. Next, a menu will appear in which we will have the option of "Use a device" to use our recovery unit directly.

In any case, we can also choose a series of options available to recover the system with other means.

If we choose "solve problems" we can then choose the option that best suits:

  • System Restore: If we had a restore point created, we can use it to try to recover our equipment. We can go back to a previous version of Windows 10: this is normally available when we have just updated our computer from previous versions or with Windows Update. Recover Windows with a system image Startup repair : Windows will try to repair the system startup files Startup Configuration or UEFI Firnware Configuration: using this option we will be able to start the computer in safe mode. Command Prompt: using this option we can enter recovery commands for the system, for example, CHKDSK. (we recommend this option)

To know more about CHKDSK visit our tutorial:

In any case, the device will try to restore Windows with the option we have chosen. If neither option has worked, our system may need to be restored to a new copy. For this we will need to create a bootable USB with the clean Windows 10 image for its installation.
