Sometimes we may need to touch the Windows registry for a specific task. The drawback that can occur when we modify the registry data is that there is no undo command, if we make changes within the Regedit application, to return to the default values, we will have to do it manually.

Fortunately, there are two ways outside of Regedit to undo any changes we make.

Creating a backup in Regedit

Regedit allows you to make a full or partial backup of the Windows registry, for this we do the following:

  • Within the application we go to the File menu and select the Export option. At this point we will see that below there is a box that allows us to export the entire record or a selected branch, in our case we choose 'All' , we put a name and save it. In case we want to undo the changes, we go to File and select the Import option. We chose the backup that we had created and ready.

Using System Restore to undo change in Windows registry

In general, System Restore is already activated by default, otherwise we will activate it only for the C: drive where the operating system is.

  • To open the tool we go to the Start Menu and look for 'Create a restore point' . The tool opens and here we will activate the protection for the C: drive (if it is already activated, skip this step) . We select the C: drive and click on Configure. We activate the box 'Activate system protection' and we accept. To create a restore point, we are going to click on the Create button… We put a name on it and we accept. Once the process is finished, we will have our restore point available to make any changes we want in Regedit. When we want to restore the system and undo any change in the Windows registry, we will only have to click on the System Restore button, there will be our newly created restoration with the name we choose. We select that backup and click Finish to restore the system.

It is that simple to restore the changes we make in the Windows registry, I hope it has been useful and see you next time.
