Undoubtedly, the new equipment increasingly has more advanced options and faster connection ports and with more functionalities, this is the case of the multimedia input and output ports called HDMI and Display Port. These ports are available on both graphics cards and portable devices, and allow us to connect more than one screen on our computers. In this way we can expand our desktop beyond a simple screen

How to connect another screen on a PC

The most normal thing is that on our computer we have a connected screen. This can be directly the screen of our laptop or a monitor of a desktop PC connected to the graphics card.

But also we can not only connect one but two or more screens depending on the number of ports that our team has available.

The first thing we will have to do is identify how many ports we have on our graphics card and what type they are and also what type of port the screen has. In this way we will know which cable we should buy for the connection. We can find two main types:

HDMI (left) and Display Port (right)

Once these are identified, all we have to do is physically connect a second screen to one of the ports on our graphics card. In this way the physical link will be established.

Set up two monitors in Windows 10

Let's proceed then to the configuration in the system of the connection of these monitors.

  • The first thing we should do is right click on the desktop and choose " Screen Settings "

  • A configuration window will appear in which we will see the graphic representation of the two screens denoted by the numbers 1 and 2

If this representation does not appear, we must click on the " detect " button located just to the right of the representation. In this way the system should correctly detect the monitors that are connected.

In the multi-screen section below, we will have all the options:

  • Duplicate these screens: duplicate the image of one screen also on the other Extend these screens: extend the desktop area to both screens Show only in 1: to show the desktop only in the first screen Show only in 2: to show the desktop only on the second screen

Mirror screen in Windows 10

Duplicating the screen is useful if, for example, we have equipment that monitors certain parameters, and we want to introduce another screen for a different room in which these results must also be shown.

  • To duplicate the screen we will go to the right area of the configuration window and navigating through it we will have to identify the section " Several screens ". There we must choose the option " Duplicate these screens "

In this simple way, we will have duplicated screens on our device.

We must take into account that if the screens are of different sizes, the resolution may be negatively affected by the image on the larger screen due to the smaller screen.

With the mirrored screen, you cannot set a different resolution or a different background for each screen independently.

Extend or split screen

Extending or dividing the screen in Windows 10 will allow us to extend the desktop to the two screens simultaneously, distributing the graphic representation between both screens and thereby expanding it. This is very useful for playing games on multiple screens or simulators.

  • To divide the screen, we must go to the " Multiple screens " section and display the options. Here we will have to choose " Extend these screens "

In this way, a new desktop will appear on each of the two screens.

If we try dragging a window with the mouse, we will see that we can move it from one screen to another, even being able to expand it until it picks up both screens. The ideal to extend a screen is to have two of the same resolution and size, this way you will see an enlarged image and perfectly fit.

Change individual resolution of each screen

If the monitors are not the same size or resolution, the windows that we extend in this one, will be shown cut by the resolution change. What we will have to do then is put both screens at the same resolution so that when extending sales they are well fitted.

  • Within the screen configuration, we must place ourselves on the graph that represents the different screens. We will have the option of clicking on each one individually. We will click on the one we want to change resolution

  • Then we will go a little further down to the “ Scale and distribution ” section. In the resolution tab, we will choose the same as the one we have on the other screen so that both are the same size for resolution purposes.

In this way the screens, the background and what we see will be better fitted in both simultaneously.

Put extended desktop wallpaper to both screens

Using the extended screen mode we can configure an extended desktop background common to both screens.

  • To do this we must right-click on the desktop and choose " Personalize " Located in the " Backgrounds " option we go to the " Choose setting " section and choose the " Extend " option

In this way the background will be extended to both screens simultaneously.

We will not be able to configure two different wallpapers on each screen.

Hide taskbar on split screen

As we have noted, even if the screen is divided in its entire length from the two screens, the taskbar will appear in duplicate on both. To remove the bar from the second monitor we will do the following:

  • We open the Windows appearance settings through the " Personalize " option of the desktop options and go to the last option " Taskbar " We must locate the option " show the taskbar on all screens " within the “ Multiple screens ” section. If we deactivate it, the task bar will disappear from one of the screens.

Change settings using keyboard shortcut

Among the many keyboard shortcuts that Windows implements, one of them is especially useful for these purposes. From this we can quickly access the screen configuration of our system.

We will have to press the key combination " Windows + P " to access it.

On the right side, the different options that we had before will appear in the configuration window. So we can directly choose any of them.

This is the way in which we can both duplicate screen and divide screen in Windows 10. In addition, we have given you some notions of configuration that you must have present when choosing one of the options.

We also recommend:

Do you want to play with several screens at the same time? You just have to choose to extend the screens and the game will run on both simultaneously.
