As you know, Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus in all its flavors including Ubuntu Gnome has recently arrived. One of the aspects that most disappointed fans of the latter is that it comes standard with Gnome 3.18 instead of the latest Gnome 3.20 version that officially came out when Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 was already in the freezing phase. However it is possible to install Gnome 3.20 on Ubuntu 16.04.

Learn how to install Gnome 3.20 in Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Xenial Xerus in a very simple way

Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 came out in its official version with Gnome Shell along with most GTK libraries in version 3.18, although it does include some small Gnome 3.20 components such as GNOME Software and GNOME Calendar. One of the aspects that most characterizes GNU / Linux is the freedom it gives the user and, how could it be otherwise, we can take advantage of this freedom to install Gnome 3.20 on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Xenial Xerus with just a few steps.

First of all, we should activate the Adwaita theme, which is the one that comes with Gnome 3.20 by default to avoid possible complications during its installation. Once Gnome 3.20 is installed we can try other themes to stay with the one we like the most.

Now we add the GNOME Staging repository from the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging

Next we proceed to update our system:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt dist-upgrade

We recommend reading our guides: how to install Ubuntu Tweak in Ubuntu 16.04 and How to install Cinnamon 3.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

With these simple steps we should already have Gnome installed on our Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Xenial Xerus. We only have to restart the computer to make sure that all the libraries are loaded correctly.

There should be no problem in the process, but as always in computing, nothing is 100% secure. In case something doesn't work well we can go back to Gnome 3.18 by executing the following commands in the terminal:

sudo apt install ppa-purge

sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
