First of all, we should activate the Adwaita theme, which is the one that comes with Gnome 3.20 by default to avoid possible complications during its installation. Once Gnome 3.20 is installed we can try other themes to stay with the one we like the most.
Now we add the GNOME Staging repository from the terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
Next we proceed to update our system:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

With these simple steps we should already have Gnome installed on our Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Xenial Xerus. We only have to restart the computer to make sure that all the libraries are loaded correctly.
There should be no problem in the process, but as always in computing, nothing is 100% secure. In case something doesn't work well we can go back to Gnome 3.18 by executing the following commands in the terminal:
sudo apt install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
