As part of the release of the new Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) operating system, the official Ubuntu GNOME 3.24 distribution has also been released online, bringing to light some of its new features.

Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 is the first version of this distribution to have the updated GNOME Stack and based on the new GNOME 3.24 desktop environment, which is an important version that provides many new features, such as a filter for night light that reduces the tone blue emitted by the computer screen.

Some of the Ubuntu GNOME 3.24 applications are from the previous stack, GNOME 3.22, especially so that the distribution has greater stability. This includes apps like Nautilus, Evolution, the terminal and the Software Center.

On the other hand, the new platform also brings support for Flatpak by default in case you want to use various archived applications such as Flatpaks, but it also includes the chrome-gnome-shell, which provides integration with the GNOME Shell for the Google Chrome browser. Additionally, the Tracker search indexing engine is now inside a secure sandbox.

Unsurprisingly, Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 now offers an experimental Waland session, which can be selected by the user from the login screen. However, the default session is still X11 in the case of this version, although Canonical expect to make the leap to Wayland by default next year with the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Inside, the new Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 is powered by the same components as its older brother, Ubuntu 17.04. This includes the Linux kernel 4.10, the Mesa 17.0 graphics stack, and the X-Org Server 1.19 graphics server. On the other hand, from now on Swap files will be used instead of Swap partitions for new installations, while systemd-resolved is the default DNS resolver.

You can download Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) now from the previous link for 32 or 64 bit architectures. This version will have official support by Canonical for 9 months, until January 2018.
