Steam has become an indispensable tool for all PC gamers. The popular Valve store came 13 years ago and since then it has not stopped growing until it became the absolute benchmark when it comes to buying video games for our computers, those days of moving to a store to buy the new game on CD were left behind. (Yes, games used to come on 600MB CDs.) Although Windows is the quintessential gamer platform, you can also use Steam to access a good number of games on Linux distributions such as Ubuntu.

Activate the repository and install Steam on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial xerus

Steam is found in the Ubuntu repositories, so its installation is extremely simple, however, as it is proprietary software and therefore not free, it is found in the " multiverse" sections of the repositories that are not activated by default. Therefore the first step will be to add this section of the repositories so that we can download and install Steam on our brand new Ubuntu.

To add the "multiverse" section of the repositories we can proceed in two ways, graphically or through the handy command terminal. To do it graphically we just have to follow the following steps:

  1. Open the "Software and updates" section from the Unity Dash. Enter "Ubuntu Software" Check the option ' Ubuntu Software Restricted by Copyright (Multiverse) ' Close.

With this you will have already added the “multiverse” repository. Not easy? Well there is a second way to do it even faster, simply open a terminal and enter:

sudo add-apt-repository multiverse

Once the corresponding repository has been added, you can now install Steam with the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install steam
