Those who use macOS know how useful the native Notes app is, whether it's to make a short shopping list, to make a quick note, and even to help with teamwork by sharing a note with others. But in addition to all this, in the Notes application in macOS, it is possible to keep individual floating notes on the windows of other applications so that they always remain in view regardless of the application you are currently using.

How to float a note on macOS

Floating notes are an extremely helpful and useful resource. For example, if you're writing a report or a class assignment, they can keep the information you need in view. It is also very useful when you are looking for information online, to record links, data, etc. Let's see how to float a note in macOS:

  • First of all, open the Notes application, located in the Applications folder of your Mac or, almost certainly, in the same dock on your desktop. Click on the button to create a note or select an existing note in the list of notes in the left pane. In the Notes menu bar, select Window → Float the selected note.

Automatically, the Note will create its own window that will remain above the rest of the windows that you have open corresponding to other applications and even to the Notes app itself.

If you want to disable the float feature but keep the note in its own separate window from the Notes app, simply click inside the note window and again select Window → Float Above All to uncheck the option in the menu bar.

Remember that you can have as many note windows open as you like: just double click on each note in the note list and they will appear separately on the screen. Then you can place them on the screen as you like, and control which ones do or do not float using the menu bar option described above.
