Remove CMOS battery or battery

This method is interesting for those who have problems accessing your BIOS, either because the logo does not appear or because we cannot get a video signal on our monitor.

First of all, you have to unplug your computer and leave it without power. My advice is to disconnect the power cable that goes to the power supply. Wait a reasonable time of 30 or 15 minutes and proceed to open the PC case to access the motherboard.

Go to the motherboard and look for a round or button cell battery that will be installed on it, like the one we see in the image below.

This is the CMOS battery, so we will remove it, wait 5 minutes and put it back as it was before.

This button cell battery is responsible for supplying a bit of current to the motherboard to keep the BIOS settings saved when we turn off our computer and leave the motherboard without electricity. In this way, removing the CMOS battery, we leave the motherboard without electricity so that the BIOS is unconfigured, resetting it.

After placing it, we will close the box, plug the power cable back in and turn on the PC. Access the BIOS to verify that it has been reset.

As for laptops, it is more difficult to find because it is more protected under a kind of small structure. On the other hand, we can also find it as on a desktop PC motherboard.

Use jumper or button on the motherboard

If the CMOS battery method does not work, we will have to go to the next method: use the CLEAR CMOS jumper or button . We will do the same as before:

We unplug the power cable, open the PC, go to the motherboard.

We will have to find a jumper or piece of black, red or blue plastic that can be removed. It is usually placed in a 3 or 2-pin module. Normally, the module will be 3 pins and the jumper is placed between two, leaving one pin free. That being said, we can find a lot of 2-pin too.

Other interesting tricks to reset BIOS

Personally, I had to do this step when I had problems with the BIOS and it was very difficult for me to find the jumper in question because it is a very small part. There are certain tricks to find this:

Look close to the CMOS battery. Many brands of motherboards often place the jumper near the CMOS battery. Take a look at that area to see if you find those two pins. Letters CLR_CMOS, CLEAR_CMOS, CLRPWD, PASSWORD or ERASE. They usually put this description right next to us so we can find it. You may have a button. It is a very small button that we find on the motherboard that is usually accompanied by the CLR_CMOS series. On MSI boards we usually find 2 pins without a jumper near the CMOS battery. On those 2 pins we find the description of JBAT1 (Jumper battery 1). On the ASUS boards we can find 2 pins called CLRTC by the CMOS battery area.

In the event that we have the plastic part placed in the jumper, it is best to consult the motherboard manufacturer's manual. A priori, we can do the following:

If it is 2-pin, we will remove it. If it is 3-pin, we will change it.

Now it only remains to get into the BIOS of our computer to see if it has been reset properly. If yes, put the jumper back as it was.

What if I only have 2 pins with nothing? How to reset BIOS?
