Surely almost everyone has ever tried to enter a page where we are subscribed or even on our computer and we have forgotten the password. Furthermore, not knowing how to recover it, especially if we have a local user, we have been forced to restore our equipment. In this tutorial we show you how to reset Windows 10 password in the different ways that Windows 10 has

The security of our team is something that we should not take lightly. Practically all of us have our equipment connected to the Internet, which means that it is exposed to innumerable vulnerabilities. Therefore it is very important to have our access to the computer protected by password or the new PIN functionality offered by Windows 10.

Types of user accounts for Windows 10

Microsoft accounts:

Windows 10 offers the possibility of creating a user account for our system from a My Microsoft account, be it Hotmail email, or any other account belonging to Microsoft.

The management of this account, such as changing the password, can be done from any device with internet access. Using this type of user account for our team is safer than a local account.

Local accounts:

These are accounts created exclusively for use in the operating system. These accounts must be managed directly within our operating system since they are offline.

Reset Windows 10 password if it's a Microsoft account

If we have forgotten the password for our Microsoft account, the option “I forgot the password” will appear just below the introduction box . So we click on that option.

A window will open with the Microsoft account in which we want to reset the password and a Captcha security box. Remember that this is case sensitive.

Once entered and validated, a window will appear to send a security code to another account that we have linked to it. This could be another email from Microsoft, Gmail, Yahoo !, etc.

In the event that your account is not linked to any other, we select "I do not have any of these tests" above. In this case, it will tell you that the password reset process must be done in a web browser. We will continue with the assumption that we have a linked account.

We place our other account and choose the option “Send code”. Then a 7 digit code will be sent to the other account. We will have to enter it to continue the process.

Next, we already put our new password and choose "next".

That's it, the lock screen will appear again where you can enter your user's password. The process has been fairly straightforward.

Reset Windows 10 password if it's a local account

The reset method for a local account is considerably more complicated. In fact, in its web portal, Microsoft informs us that we should reset our equipment to be able to access our system again. Which is true if we only use the means that Microsoft provides us. Let's see what we can do.

Reset password from another local account

One possibility that we have before having to reset our system is to use another local user account that we can enter. In addition, it must have administrator permissions.

To check if this other account has administrator credentials we will do the following:

  • We go to start and write the command "netplwiz" Press Enter or select the search result to execute the command.

If a window appears asking us for a username and password, let's go. This means that the user you are trying to access is not an administrator.

If we are lucky that it is, a window will appear showing the users that exist on this computer and the group to which they belong.

We will only have to select the user that we cannot access and choose the “Reset password” option . In this way we can put a new one or leave it blank and delete your password.

Reset password by creating reset disk

The option offered by the operating system itself is the possibility of creating a password reset disk for the account from which we are creating the disk. To create this device we will have to go to the user account options in the Windows control panel. The steps to follow for its creation will be the following:

  • We go to the Start menu and write Control Panel, then we go to "User Accounts"

  • In the left side list we choose the option "Create a disk to reset password". A wizard will be opened for the creation of said device. Giving "next" on the first screen will show us another where we must choose the USB device that we are going to use.

Next, we will have to put the user password from where we are creating the password reset disk.

We finish the wizard when the disc has been created. Now we will have a password reset disk for the account where we created it. If in the future we forget the password, through this USB we can reset it. Let's do it:

  • When we have put a wrong password on the computer, the option to "reset password" will appear just below the user account. With the inserted USB, the wizard to reset this user's Windows 10 password will open. We press several times on next and a screen will appear where we can put the new password

Once set, we can enter our user.

This method is good for when we have just created the user. We make our reset disk for future use.

If we do not have it, Windows does not offer any solution in this regard. The only thing we can do is reset the computer with a new installation of Windows.

Reset Windows 10 password using Windows 10 installation DVD or USB

Another option we have available is the use of a Windows 10 installation USB to access the Windows command window. Through a series of modifications in our installed operating system we can eliminate the password by cheating a little.

Using this method, what we are going to do is get the command window to appear on the Windows cluck screen after pressing the accessibility icon. In this way we can create an administrator user. Sneak into Windows with it and reset the password of our user.

The first thing we will have to do is create a bootable USB of Windows 10. And the second is to modify the startup sequence of our equipment. To do this, you just have to visit our tutorial on:

If our BIOS is UEFI type, we will only have to press the "F8" key right at startup and a boot menu will open where we can select our USB.

Once these previous steps have been carried out, we insert our USB into the equipment before starting it. The system will load the files from the USB until the Windows 10 installation wizard comes out .

Changing the file "Utilman.exe" to "cmd.exe"

At this point we will have to press the key combination "SHIFT + F10" on our keyboard. The command window will appear.

Here we will have to do a series of steps until we find what we want. The first thing we will have to take into account is what our hard drive is called for Windows 10. Normally it is assigned the letter C: or D: and what we have to do is know what it is.

Every time we write something in the console we will have to press Enter to execute it

  • We are going to write "C:" to place ourselves on our hypothetical hard drive. Then we write "dir" After writing this, we should get a list of folders that would typically be in our system

  • It seems that we have not been right. Let's try then with "D:" and write "dir" again

  • This looks better. We see a folder named "Users". To make sure this is it, let's write "dir Users".

  • Well, in this folder our users appear so we are in the right place. We are going to write the following commands.
  1. cd windows \ system32 ren utilman.exe utilman1.exe ren cmd.exe utilman.exe

Creation of new administrator user

After doing this without any error, we will close the window, restart our equipment and remove the USB. We will let Windows restart normally until we get to the lock screen again.

Now what we will have to do is click on the accessibility icon, in the lower right corner. We will get the Windows command introduction window.

Again we will have to introduce two new commands to create a new user with which to access the system. In addition, it must have administrator permissions.

For this we write the following commands in order: (in user we put a username)

  1. net user user / add net localgroup administrators user / add

Once this is done correctly we restart our computer again. now we will enter not our new user to reset our user's Windows 10 password.

  • In the beginning we write the command "netplwiz" and execute it. The user advanced options screen will appear. We select our user and click on "reset password". We accept the changes and our user will be ready to use again.

Restoring changes made to "Utilman.exe"

We have achieved our goal, but our equipment has been modified in certain aspects. Let's leave it as it was before.

To do this we will turn off the computer, introduce the bootable USB with Windows 10 again and start it.

Again press "SHIFT + F10" to enter the console. And we write the following commands:

  1. d: (or the letter of your hard disk, you already know it from before) cd windows \ system32 ren utilman.exe cmd.exe ren utilman1.exe utilman.exe

With this our System will remain as it was before. You should only delete the user created to reset your user's Windows password from the user account options in the control panel.

Reset Windows password with PCunlocker

For this method we will have to use a software external to Microsoft called PCUnlocker. In addition, it will be necessary to create a bootable USB or CD, since it must be started before Windows on the computer.

We will use a bootable USB that we will create with the free Rufus tool .

Creation of bootable USB.

The first thing we will have to do is download the elements we need:

PCUlocker is a paid software, to unlock our user we will need to buy a copy of the program.

Rufus is an application to burn ISO images like that of PCUnlocker to DVD or USB.

  • The first thing we have to do is unzip the downloaded file to obtain the ISO image of PCUnlocker. And the second will be to start the Rufus application. Next, we select from the program the image. We configure the partition scheme as MBR and the destination system as BIOS. to "start". In a few seconds we will have our bootable USB.

Reset user password

The next thing we will have to do is configure our equipment so that it is capable of booting from a USB device. To do this, visit the following tutorial:

If our BIOS is UEFI type, we will only have to press the "F8" key right at startup and a boot menu will open where we can select our USB.

Once PCUnlocker loads, we will be presented with a screen where all the users we have in Windows 10 will appear.

We will only have to choose our user from the list, and give "Reset password"

The free version does not have this option enabled so it would be necessary to buy the software.

Reset Windows 10

The options available to Windows have been exhausted and the only thing we can do is reset our operating system. The fastest way to do this is from the Windows 10 block screen.

  • To do this we will go to the lower right corner and click on the power icon. At this time we press the "Shift" key on our keyboard and select "Restart". Then we will get the menu of recovery options for Windows 10.

  • We select "Reset this computer" Next we select "remove all" and the reset of the computer will beginAfter a restart of the system, it will ask us to confirm if we want to reset Windows 10. We will accept to finally start the procedure.

As if it were not enough, the option to keep our files will not work, so we will lose everything in our user account.

To learn other methods of installation and reset of our equipment we recommend:

The truth is that, despite being a system in continuous update, Microsoft has not implemented any system to reset the password that is useful. We find it disproportionate to have to reset the system with a clean copy simply for losing the password. In future tutorials we will teach you how to be able to reset Windows 10 password by means other than Microsoft.

Remember to write down your password somewhere or use create a password reset disk as we have taught you in this tutorial. Has this tutorial been useful to you? To suggest new tutorials or improvements, just leave it in the comments.
