Does your computer have little RAM memory? It is possible to expand it by using a USB Pen drive as RAM. Enter to know this great tutorial.
Not all of us have a 16 GB RAM memory, but the normal thing is usually between 4 GB and 8 GB. However, having 4 GB in Windows 10 is quite a challenge because today's applications, such as Google Chrome, consume a lot of resources. So, we teach you how to use USB as RAM in a few simple steps.
Why is RAM so important?
At the time, we talk about what RAM is, but we will give a short definition to introduce this entry. As my colleague José Antonio Castillo defined, RAM is the following:
It is that memory in charge of loading all the instructions that are executed in the processor so that it can access them.
Those instructions usually come from Windows, from the devices we connect (such as an external HDD) or from what we do on the PC. Therefore, the better our RAM memory, the faster it will load those instructions. When we say better, we mean better frequency, better type, better latency, etc. Everything influences.
Method # 1: virtual RAM
This method will use virtual memory to convert the storage capacity of the Pen drive into RAM. To do this, we will do the following.
- We insert the Pen Drive to use the USB as RAM. We open the Start Menu to get into the " Control Panel ".
- With the icon view, we enter " System ".
- Inside, we go to " Advanced system configuration".
- A new window will open, so in the " advanced options " tab we click on the " Configuration " button under " Performance ". With another window open, we go to the " Advanced options " tab and go to " Virtual memory ". We give " Change ". We uncheck the " Automatically manage paging file size for all units " tab.
- So, you select your Pen and add the same amount in both boxes. IMPORTANT: the Pen must be at least 4 GB. For example:
-
- If the Pen has 4GB and we have 3, 700 MB free, you have to use 3, 690 MB.
-
If you want to return your Pen to normal, open the Virtual Memory options and check the option that we have previously unchecked "Automatically manage the size of the paging file for all units".
Method # 2: ReadyBoost
This method is perfect for Windows 10 or Windows 8 because it works quite well. I am warning you that this method will only work when the equipment has low specifications; otherwise, we will get a message like this.
The method is the following:
- We go to " This team ". We right-click on our Pen and click on " Properties ". We go to the " ReadyBoost " tab. We mark the option " Use this device " and select all the memory we can. If your PEN is 4 GB, you can use 3800 MB, for example. We give " Apply " and we will be done. If you want to revert the configuration in the future, just select the option " Do not use this device " in the "ReadyBoost" tab. To return our Pen to normality, just delete the " Readyboost " file.
We would have already finished this method. As you can see, it is a very simple and intuitive process.
Method # 3: use external programs
We find programs like Ram Disk or eBoostr that help us take advantage of the space of our "Pen" to be able to use it as RAM. In the first, we can transform the free MBs from the USB to use them as RAM. In this way, we do the same as before, but with a downloadable program.
In the second, we can make our PC faster thanks to a couple of options that it provides and serves the same purpose.
