Renowned overclocker shamino1978 released a new version of its CCX Overclocking Tool, adding overclocking capability and individual Core Complex (CCX) instead of single core or full CPU. Although you can overclock your Ryzen CPUs via the motherboard BIOS or AMD's own Ryzen Master software, you cannot overclock an individual CCX.

CCX Overclocking Tool allows Ryzen processors to be overclocked beyond limits

In case you don't know what a CCX is, it's basically half of a Ryzen CPU. Each eight-core processor (whether all eight cores are working or not) has its cores divided into two groups of four cores, and these groups are known as core complexes or CCXs. The image above shows a three quadrilateral CPU with two processors, each with two CCXs for a total of four CCXs in the entire CPU.

It is similar to how the Ryzen 9 3900X and 3950X have two compute chiplets that make up a full CPU; two CCXs form a complete processor. In the case of the Ryzen 7 2700, there would be four cores in each group, and for the Ryzen 5 2600, three cores in each group, and so on. These groups must have the same number of cores for the CPU to work, so we don't see seven-core Ryzen CPUs and no Ryzen 5 2600 with four cores in one CCX and two in another.

CCX overclocking Tool is an interesting tool to squeeze a little more performance out of an AMD processor. Although Ryzen 3000 series CPUs typically have a fairly high clock, older generation Ryzen 1000 and 2000 CPUs may benefit from overclocking an individual CCX. When OC is applied manually, the full CPU can only reach the maximum speed allowed by the core with lower frequency. By isolating the core with the weakest performance to a CCX, you could theoretically overclock the other half of the CPU to achieve higher frequencies.

We are not sure how this would work in practice, but there could be an additional 100 MHz or more, although only for four cores. Updated CCX Overclocking Tool is now available for those who want to experiment with their Ryzen processors.
