Known for mitigating DDoS attacks and being a CDN provider , Cloudflare will incorporate AMD EPYC on its Gen X servers. Inside, the details.

It is not a company of which we have much knowledge because it is not focused on retail, but offers services to companies. In this case, the news is marked by the arduous fight that exists between Intel and AMD for the server sector. It is a fact that EPYC is a reality and that the 9th generation of Intel Xeon chips is being toppled.

Cloudflare and AMD, joined by Gen X servers

AMD EPYC processors target the latest Gen X servers. Cloudflare is a company that uses multi-functional servers, this means that each server is capable of handling any type of company load, such as reducing DDoS attacks, sending content, security, DNS, etc.

Cloudflare's strategy is to minimize the hardware configurations for its servers for much easier maintenance and lower costs. The hardware specifications of its servers are periodically renewed and classified by generations.

In the case of Gen X servers, they are configured with a simple 2nd generation AMD EPYC 7642 socket with 256 GB RAM DDR4 octa-channel with a frequency of 2933 MHz. In addition, its main storage is made up of NVMe hard drives.

The EPYC 7642 is a 48-core, 96-wire processor with a base frequency of 2.4 GHz and a 256 MB L3 cache. According to Cloudflare's post, they have chosen this processor because, although its TDP (225 W) is higher, it is less than the combined TDP of their 9th generation servers and they decided to prioritize performance, rather than efficiency.

Despite the fact that AMD offers a larger choice of cores, the gains in performance gains for our software and usage were not compelling enough.

In the coming weeks, the new servers will be online.
