DNS is a technology that is more present than we think. In fact, it is essential to be able to navigate and a serial configuration may not be what you need. Do not worry because it is possible to change the DNS for Google's. Do you want to know how?

Let's get started!

What is it and why do we need it?

As we have seen in other tutorials, the IP address becomes the identity of our team and serves to differentiate itself from other devices. It is easy to write down the IPs of a local network, but of a global network? It is impossible.

DNS is a technology based on a database whose function is to translate domain names; or what is the same, the IP address of the web page hosting.

Each computer has a small cache memory where it stores the last addresses we have used. If we want to visit a domain that is not in that cache, we will have to use the DNS server of our PC or router to search for that IP address. As you may have guessed, this means working harder.

Why switch to Google DNS?

Mainly, to increase the response speed when loading web pages. When we enter a website there is not only a DNS request, but many more. Imagine what happens if the DNS server is not fast, is crowded or saturated, or cannot forward the request to another computer.

You can get an idea of what happens on web pages at Christmas, Black Friday, Valentine's Day or at: servers are saturated because many users are making requests to access web pages. Think that many sites are hosted on distant servers (Russia, United States). What happens here? Latency, it takes longer to load due to the distance.

Ok, if I change the DNS I will get faster access to certain web pages, but why use Google's DNS? Because this company has updated servers with huge databases that manage to index the vast majority of websites in the world, redirecting us to the servers closest to our PC.

On the other hand, we can skip restrictions to access certain websites. We can be found in a country that restricts access to certain web pages. How can we bypass this restriction? Changing the DNS of our internet provider to Google's, for example.

Finally, Google's DNS are constantly updated, which gives us greater security.

For this reason, users decide to choose to change the DNS of their internet providers for Google's DNS.

Are Google DNS the best?

So are Google's DNS the fastest because its servers are the best? No. It depends on what our location is, where the servers of our internet provider are and what is the network to which we connect.

And how do I know if it will benefit me to change? There are tools that benchmark the connectivity of your computer to tell us which DNS is most recommended in relation to location-speed. We recommend namebench

How can I change Google's DNS?

As the title of the article says, we are going to focus on our PC, specifically Windows and Mac. However, we can carry out the same process on tablets or smartphones.

From the router

If we change the DNS from our router, it will affect all the devices that connect to it. This is very useful to change the DNS to all the computers in our network at the same time.

To access our router we do the following:

  • We open our Start Menu and write " cmd " to open the command prompt. We write " ipconfig " to know our gateway.

  • Copy the address of the gateway because we will use it. We open our browser and in the navigation bar paste that address and press enter. You have to enter the router, so two boxes will appear: Username and Password.

      • Try putting "admin" (without quotes) in both. Try putting 1234 in both. Try putting 0000 in both.
If you can not enter, go to your router because the credentials to enter may be there. If not, you will have to contact your operator. Once inside, we will have to look for options called Primary DNS and Secondary DNS (normally). They are usually found in the LAN section of the router. When you have entered, copy the addresses that exist and paste them in a notepad to be able to restore them in the future, if we want. We change the DNS to these:
      • IPv4: 8.8.8.8. IPv6: 2001: 4860: 4860: 8888.
We save the changes and restart the router.

From Windows

This is easier, but the changes will only take effect on the team that we carry out the process. Let's go there.

  • We open the Start Menu, write “ PaneldeControl ” and open it.

  • We go to " Network and Sharing Center ". Inside, we go to the Ethernet connection we have.

  • We give " Properties " and double click on " Internet Protocol version 4 ".

  • Within this menu, we enable the option " Use the following DNS server addresses " (the last one). Now, write the Google DNS there and when you finish you accept it. You have to do the same, in case you have IPv6, but you have to put the DNS that we have put of IPv6, not those of IPv4.

From Mac

The process similar to that of Windows, has no complications if you follow the steps:

  • Open " System Preferences " from the top taskbar we have. We go to " Network " and configure the network interface we want. Click on " advanced " and we go to the " DNS " tab. We replace DNS with Google's.

They are not always the best option

In my case, I have passed the namebench and it has told me that my primary DNS is the fastest according to my location. However, he has recommended a secondary school to the one I have marked.

Therefore, we recommend that you run this program to find out which are the best DNS in your case. Google's may not be suitable for you.

We will have finished the tutorial on how to change Google's DNS. We hope you liked and served it. If you have any questions, let us know below. We love helping you!
