Keep it clean
Before you worry about updates or tweaks, just keeping the components clean will make a big difference. The great enemy, of course, is dust. It builds up surprisingly fast and will destroy the ability of components like fans and heat sinks to keep things cool.
Therefore, the first step in how to improve the cooling of my PC is to remove the dust. What you should do is disconnect and turn off your PC before starting the cleaning. Make sure that all fans and heat sinks have been carefully dusted, including the various vents and ports. As for water, it can be used in the passive part of a heatsink once it has been completely removed from the PC and separated from any electronic devices such as fans or fan controllers. Vacuum cleaners can also be a great help, but don't just stick a high-suction vacuum blindly into your PC. It won't end well.
Use good quality thermal paste
If you have successfully dusted off, you will have removed the cooler from your CPU. This is also your chance to make sure the cooler is properly seated with a good thermal paste when you reassemble it.
A small tube of thermal paste from an online PC store is a very small investment. As for the amount of paste, it is preferred to strategically place multiple small dots around the CPU heat diffuser rather than a large mass in between.
Improves air flow
Adequate air flow is absolutely critical. Achieving good air flow requires attention inside and outside your team. First, make sure there is enough space between the box and any external barriers to allow air to flow properly. In other words, don't get your equipment too close to the wall.
Indoors, do your best to give each component a decent space to breathe. Often you will have, for example, more than one space where you can connect your graphics card. Do not put PCI and PCI Express cards together unless absolutely necessary. Some strategically placed links can also help with cabling. Also, in an ideal world, the front case fans will suck in fresh air and the rear fans will blow hot air for optimum flow in all key components.
Surely many of you have box fans that are not connected to your current equipment. Your motherboard will have plenty of additional fan ports and chassis space to put them, so there is no excuse for not using them. Fans of 120mm or more don't generate much noise and will help you tremendously when it comes to getting hot air out of your PC.
Buy a better heatsink
If you are using the original OEM heatsink that comes with your CPU, buy a decent cooler. A basic model can be priced at approximately 20-30 euros. It is a small investment given the long-term advantage. If you want examples, there are literally hundreds of models to choose from. Just make sure it fits inside your PC. Consider liquid cooling
We are fans of liquid cooling. Today's closed kits are affordable, easy to assemble, zero maintenance, and high performance. For about 50-70 euros you can buy a single fan water cooler with a 120mm radiator. You'll need to check compatibility with your chassis, but once you've gone overboard, you don't want to go back.
