How to know the data of your motherboard without opening it

Sooner or later you will need to know the manufacturer and exact model of your motherboard, especially if you are planning to do an upgrade on your computer, as the processor's update capacity is determined by the model of the motherboard.

In addition, you should have this information when you want to do a BIOS update or download the manual or the motherboard drivers. A BIOS update is necessary for the computer to recognize a new processor; and the manual is necessary to determine the maximum amount of RAM that your computer is capable of recognizing, for example.

Discovering this information is not so obvious, since many manufacturers simply do not print their names (models assembled by brands) or the name of the motherboard model on the motherboards. Also, you may want to check if the motherboard installed on your computer is really the model you bought. However, if you open your computer, the warranty will expire (if it has stamps). Thus, you will have to learn how to find this information without opening your computer.

Identifying the motherboard using software

Inside the BIOS of the micro, there is a serial number that includes a code for the manufacturer. The hardware identification program reads the serial number from the BIOS and decodes it for you.

We will teach you how to use four hardware identification programs, so you can discover the manufacturer and model of your motherboard: CPU-Z, Sandra Lite, AIDA64 and HwiNFO .

CPU-Z

CPU-Z is a very popular processor identification utility, which can also be used to identify the manufacturer and model of your motherboard.

After installing CPU-Z, click on “ Mainboard “. On the screen that will appear, CPU-Z will provide the manufacturer and model of your motherboard.

Sandra Lite

Sandra Lite is available in several versions. You must download and install the free version, called "Lite". After installing Sandra Lite, click on "Hardware". On the screen that appears, double-click the "Mainboard" icon.

Sandra Lite needs a minute to collect data about your team. On the next screen that appears, you can easily find the manufacturer of the motherboard in “ Manufacturer” and the model in “Model”.

In this window, you can also find various useful information about your motherboard, such as the number of memory sockets it has and which ones are being used, as well as the model of the chipset on which it is based. You can also find the BIOS serial number in the "BIOS" option.

AIDA64

There are two versions of the AIDA64, and you must download and install the Extreme Edition version.

After installing AIDA64, click on "MotherBoard", available on the main screen, and then click on the "MotherBoard" icon that will appear. On the next screen, the manufacturer and model are shown on the second line as “MotherBoard Name.

If you scroll the window down, you will find a link to the BIOS download page on the motherboard manufacturer's website, under the “BIOS Download” option. This is very handy if you are planning to do a BIOS update.

HWiNFO

HWiNFO is available in two versions: HWiNFO32, which should be your option if you are using a 32-bit operating system, and HWiNFO64, which should be used if you have a 64-bit operating system.

After installing the most suitable version of HWiNFO, run it (it takes a minute to collect all the hardware information from your computer). The program will automatically display the “System Summary” screen, where the manufacturer and model of the motherboard will be shown in the right column.

Enter the BIOS and identify your components

Another method is when you turn on your desktop computer, where you can pause the BIOS startup screen with the "Pause or Inter" key on your keyboard, since it has the function of pausing the BIOS screen.

Look at the top or bottom for the manufacturer and model name of your motherboard. In case you can not find it, you can enter SETUP with the DELETE key, since in some of the manufacturers of the motherboard you will not find its name but it will be found in the BIOS panel.

Method without installing software

It is worth remembering that it is not necessary to install anything for this, since you will get information from the motherboard, only with the keyboard of your computer. But why is this information relevant? Well, there are many reasons why you should know the manufacturer of the motherboard, its model, and so on. You may be wanting to install a driver, upgrade your RAM or graphics card. In short, the reasons are many.

If you still have the papers that came along with the PC, maybe you can get this information through them. However, it is always good to check whether the information is in fact correct.

The motherboard is the main component of any computer, and all other hardware components connect to it. To avoid compatibility problems when updating your PC or installing new components, it is essential to identify: manufacturer, model, chipset, and various other things.

In Windows 10 there are three very easy methods to obtain information about the motherboard, without the need to install any other specific software on your computer.

If you feel comfortable using command lines, you will surely have no problem with this tip. Much information on the motherboard can be obtained using the I nstrumentation Command-line (WMIC). With this tool we can obtain information such as manufacturer, model, name, serial number and more.

  • Open the "Run" tool in Windows by pressing Windows + R, then type cmd. Now type or paste the following command:

wmic baseboard get product, Manufacturer, version, serialnumber

This command returns the manufacturer, model, serial number and version information.

System information

Open the Run command dialog box (Windows key + R key), type msinfo32 and confirm by pressing the "OK" key. This will open the "System Information" window. In it and in the panel on the right, you will find all the details about the motherboard.

With the DirectX diagnostic tool

Open the Run command (Windows key + R key), type dxdiag and click "OK" to get all the details of your computer, it is not the best… but it is another option.

Now you have just learned how to find various information on your motherboard without installing any third-party program. As always, we recommend reading our tutorials and if you have any questions, you can contact us and we will respond.
