What is IP?

The IP comes to be the identification of our PC within a network that serves to differentiate us from the rest of the equipment that swarms around the network. Each device has an IP and it is represented in the form of numbers and dots.

There are 2 IPs: public and private. Public is the identification of our team outside our network; The private one, is the identification of the same within the local network (the one that gives our router by DHCP).

  • The private one serves to differentiate one computer from the others that are connecting to the same network. The public serves to differentiate one computer from the millions that exist on the internet.

In this way, devices that are connected to the same router will have the same public IP, but a different private IP.

Private IP in Windows

It is very simple to know it. In Windows, it can be known as follows:

  • We open the Start Menu and write "Control Panel" to access it.

  • We go to "Network and Sharing Center". We click on the hyperlink that we see next to "Connections".

  • In the new window that has opened we give "Details…". Right in the row called "IPv4 Address" we have our Private IP.

Mac

Since we know that many of you use OS X, we have also thought of you. Here it is very fast to find our private IP:

  • Go to "System Preferences". Open the "Network" section. In the "Network" window you will find your ethernet or Wi-Fi connection and the data. Where it says "IP Address" is your private IP.

Linux

As it is an operating system used, mostly, by professionals, it doesn't make much sense to tell you how to find out because it will be very simple for you.

In Ubuntu we can find out in a few steps:

  • Right-click on the network icon (arrows) on the top toolbar. Open the "connection information" option. In the IPv4 section you will find your private IP address.

How to know my public IP

We could say that it is much easier to find out our public IP because it is enough to access some web page that locates our IP, such as WhatIsMYIPAdress.com.

On this website we can know what our public IP is and from where we are connected. So we can know a lot simply with a piece of information.
