Today we present the review of the new Corsair K83 Wireless, a very special keyboard that will surprise many. It has a refined design in very thin aluminum with a high-quality membrane panel and its great novelty in the form of a touchpad with a navigation joystick. In addition, it is a wireless keyboard compatible with all kinds of household electronic devices that can be controlled.
The best option in terms of versatility, as unique features and that we will see here right now, in our in-depth analysis.
As always, we thank Corsair for their trust in the exclusive assignment of the product to carry out their analysis.
Corsair K83 Wireless technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
This new Corsair K83 Wireless keyboard is a peripheral as we have seen in the very special characteristics table, since it incorporates a whole set of navigation controls with touchpad, joystick and gaming controls. We can take it as if it were a giant controller to play if we want.
But before all that, what we will have to do is take a look at its design and its packaging. This keyboard comes in a thick cardboard box with a top opening that already lets you see the entire product on the outside, with a large color photograph along with the brand's black and yellow colors.
On the back we have another large-format photo of the keyboard, and also information about it in multiple languages. But what interests us most is the connection scheme we have in the upper right corner. This shows us that it is compatible with any multimedia device that has Bluetooth or USB.
We already open the box and find the keyboard well placed in a cation mold in a small plastic bag. In this box we will find these elements:
- Corsair K83 Wireless Keyboard 2.4GHz USB Wireless PC Receiver USB-Mini USB Cable for Wired Connection and Battery Charging Documentation and User Guide
If something stands out in the external appearance of this Corsair K83 Wireless, it is its elegance. We have a very thin keyboard, only 28 mm thick, made entirely of aluminum, both on the bottom and on the key panel. In addition, it has a dark brushed aluminum finish that gives it a very Premium appearance. The rest of the keyboard measures are 381 mm long and 125 mm wide, very compact as we see and similar to that of a laptop.
The keys are made of plastic with a coating of what appears to be nylon, being very soft and pleasant to press. These in turn have white LED backlight adjustable by Corsair iCUE, although only in power, not in color. In the place of the numerical keyboard we have a large touchpad that will do the mouse functions with its two typical buttons, and other navigation keys that we will see later.
Softening up the Corsair K83 Wireless control system a little more, we have wide keys, with curved edges and island-type, with an important separation between them. The switches in this case work by means of a membrane, it is possible to notice that they are of a high quality due to the sensations it gives us when pressing each key and when typing. In total we have 76 keys with 20 antighosting.
In addition, its extremely slim and glued to the floor design is ideal for writing, without the need for a palm rest (because it does not have it) with these low profile keys and a travel of only 1.9 mm, we will have sensations similar to a computer portable, but with much more comfortable control, in my opinion.
We now turn to see what stands out most on this Corsair K83 Wireless keyboard, which is nothing other than the touchpad and navigation controls. In the first instance we have a round touch panel next to its two control buttons that will serve as a normal and ordinary mouse like that of laptops. In addition, this panel supports gestures of up to four fingers if we are in Windows 10, which we can configure and manage from the Corsair iCUE software.
This touchpad will be very useful to use our keyboard in multimedia devices that support mice and also wireless connectivity, making it a fast and compact way to control these devices. In addition, its touch is very soft and it responds perfectly to our movements and gestures. In our opinion, aesthetically it is very well round, but with a somewhat wider square design, we would have better control of the entire screen.
But not only do we have the touchpad, this Corsair K83 Wireless also includes a game-oriented control and easy navigation thanks to an analog joystick, as well as two L and R buttons for easier control, for example in video playback and in games, if we want to play with it.
Both buttons are located in the lower area of the keyboard, in case of the "L" we have it on the front, just below the joystick, and "R" we have it in the lower area. To use these controls correctly we will have to hold the keyboard with both hands as if it were a remote control and place our thumb on the joystick, while with the others we can access these buttons quite simply and intuitively.
If we look at this front, we will also see another small button, which will be the one that turns our keyboard on and off. Right next to it we will have the mini USB port to make the wired connection of the keyboard and the charging function.
And we still have more in this Corsair K83 Wireless, for example, a large wheel for volume control located in the upper right area. It is made of metal and features a fluted surface for finer level control. Just below we have a button to activate or deactivate the keyboard lighting and another button that will perform some quite important functions:
- If it is deactivated (light off), we will have the keyboard in multimedia mode, we will have the F keys activated only with its double function (Hotskeys). But we will also have the joystick configured as a control for the selection of menus and boxes. The L and R buttons will perform the selection and backward functions, and the Windows key will be activated. If this button is activated (light on), then we will enter a keyboard gaming mode. It consists of using the joystick to move the mouse pointer and therefore the direction of the game. In this case, the F keys will recover their original function and also the double multimedia function. Likewise, the L and R buttons will become the left and right mouse click.
The dual functions of the keyboard would be activated with two other keys, first of all, the "Fn" key, as if it were a laptop. With it we will have the functions of delete, insert, etc., all this is very well explained in the manual. And with the right Ctrl key we will activate the functions of the F keys.
At the bottom we will not have legs to customize the placement of the keyboard. Its use is oriented to portability and some legs would only hinder in most cases. For the occasion a linear rubber support has been arranged on the top and bottom of its base that give excellent stability and well absorb pulsation noise.
It is time to talk about the connectivity of this Corsair K83 Wireless, and the truth is that it is very varied. The main connection for PC will be made through a 2.4 GHz wireless connection, connecting the USB receiver to our PC and turning on the keyboard. This connection travels at frequencies of 2.4 GHz and has a latency of less than 1 ms. We also have 128-bit AES encryption to block wireless eavesdropping and protect our keyboard from intrusions and keyloggers.
If what we want is to use the keyboard for a Smartphone and other devices with Bluetooth, we can also. The keys "F6" and "F7" have the possibility of activating two variants of Bluetooth 4.2 to obtain a direct connection with the devices with a latency less than 7.5 ms.
Finally we will have the traditional option, the wired option, by connecting the keyboard with a USB cable that will provide us with an ultrapolling of 1000Hz and latency of less than 1ms. In addition, this will be the natural connection when we are charging the keyboard battery, which has an autonomy of more than 40 hours of use with the lighting turned off, and 8 hours with the lighting at maximum. And really 40 hours is not long for a keyboard, since others that work by batteries last even months without needing to be recharged.
The sensations with the keyboard have been very satisfactory, we have tested it on PC, Smartphone and consoles and its operation is totally correct both on keyboards and joystick and others. In our case we do not have a TV with Bluetooth so it has not been possible to carry out this test, but the manufacturer ensures compatibility with the main brands such as Samsung, LG, and the Apple tvOS system, etc.
Finally, we must pay attention to the indicator that is right next to the "ESC" key. In its normal state it will indicate what type of connection we have activated, wireless or Bluetooth 1 and 2. But just when you turn on the keyboard or press "Fn + Enter" we will be able to know the battery charge, changing between green, amber and red depending on the level.
ICUE software for Corsair K83 Wireless
This keyboard can be managed in detail using the brand's software, Corsair iCUE, always in version 3.12 or higher.
With it we can configure macros to provide our keyboard with quick functions and as each one likes. The system will be identical to that used in other brand products, with the addition of the extra buttons it provides.
In the same way we will be able to visualize all the gestures that are compatible with the touchpad, and there really are many to choose from. Of course, previously we will have to go to the iCUE configuration section with the selected keyboard and activate the option "Activate gesture customization". Immediately we will return to the previous section where we will have a large list of gestures that we can activate or deactivate as we like.
As for the lighting effects, in this case they will be rather scarce. It is a keyboard with white LED lighting, not RGB, so we can only modify the intensity of the light, as well as place a pulse effect on it, or if we prefer, disable it completely.
We also have another calibration section for the touchpad, which will do it automatically.
In the navigation section, we can modify the speed of the touchpad pointer and the pressing speed. This is something very important depending on the screen resolution that we have, since by default it comes quite slow configuration.
In the last performance section we can disable different functions and key combinations. We can also disable the touch panel and other available functions if we wish.
Finally, in the configuration section that we have seen before, we have more options besides that, for example, modifying the keyboard layout, updating its firmware, battery status, lighting parameter, etc. Without a doubt we see this software necessary if you want to have this keyboard fully controlled, and thus make the most of its possibilities on PC.
Final words and conclusion about Corsair K83 Wireless
We can say without a doubt that this Corsair K83 Wireless is very original and practically unique in its kind. Best of all, everything you have is really useful, well thought out and with an exquisite aluminum design and quality keys. In general it is like having a keyboard plus a touchpad plus a basic console controller in a single device, and also wireless.
Its comfort for typing is fantastic, a low keyboard and with sensations similar to the best keyboards for notebooks, although not reaching the level of the Mac. The membrane used is very good, very quiet and with just the right travel. The keys are very smooth and have many double functions and very useful for a multimedia keyboard like this one.
Yes we must say that at least our unit the space key gives off the odd sound in the form of friction, it is not at all serious, but it makes us doubt if with intensive use these sounds will appear on the other keys. Although almost always, the space bar is the worst key on 98% of keyboards, it is quite normal.
We recommend our guide to the best keyboards on the market
As for the touchpad, the construction and control are at the level of laptops, smooth touch and the possibility of setting the speed. We also have mouse click buttons and gesture settings with iCUE with up to 4 fingers. The operation of the joystick has also delighted us, very easy to access and almost essential for SmartTV and multimedia centers. Perhaps a square rather than a round touchpad would be easier to operate.
Connectivity works perfectly and we can choose between wireless, Bluetooth and cable, and thus have a full range of options on the market. Although in this aspect we must say that the battery life is not exactly the best, since 40 hours for a keyboard with the lighting off is not too much. That is why this keyboard is oriented to multimedia centers and to non-continuous use to play long hours or to work.
Starting today, Corsair K83 Wireless will be available for a price of $ 99.99 on the Corsair official website and very soon from accredited dealers. It really is not an expensive price for everything that this multimedia keyboard is capable of offering us. We have been very happy with it and we recommend its purchase for users who need a versatile control for their TV, console, PC, or whatever they want.
