We're not used to seeing many powerful Chromeboxes, but this time it seems to be different with CTL's recently announced Chromebox CBx1 model, which includes an Intel Core i7 processor.

CTL Chromebox CBx1 makes use of a powerful Core i7-8550U

This little black box houses an 8th generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor and 8GB of DDR4 RAM. The Core i7-8550U is a quad-core, eight-thread processor from the Kaby Lake-R family. The processor operates at a base frequency of 1.8 GHz and can go up to 4.0 GHz in Turbo.

This processor also comes with Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics (iGPU), which supports the use of multiple monitors. The maximum supported resolution for each output is 4096 × 2304 @ 60Hz (4096 × 2304 @ 24Hz for HDMI 1.4). It also offers support for Intel Quick Sync and Clear Video.

Like all Chromeboxes, network connectivity options have been incorporated. This includes 2 × 2 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2 connections and a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port for wired connections. In terms of storage, the compact device has 32 GB of SSD storage. However, it can be expanded up to 256GB SSD for an additional couple of dollars.

Wired connectivity extends to 2 USB 2.0, 3 USB 3.0, HDMI, and 1 USB-C port (for dual monitor support).

How much does the Chromebox CBx1 cost?

The Chromebox CBx1 with an eighth-generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor begins its retail price at $ 599, and will be available in November. That's a very good price considering that that processor costs $ 409 on its own.
