Deepcool's “Gamer Storm” brand, focused on mid-range and high-end hardware, recently unveiled its range of DQ-M power supplies , available in 650, 750, and 850W models. All of them have 80 Plus Gold and Cybenetics ETA A & LAMBDA A- efficiency certification, 100% modular cabling, and promise high quality, quiet operation and a high range of protections.

In this review, we'll take a look at the 750W model. The truth is that Deepcool has left us with great expectations of quality: will they fulfill what was promised? Let's see it!

We thank Deepcool for trusting us with this source for review.

External analysis

The front of the box shows us the source in all its splendor and some of its key characteristics, although there is an erroneous fact: it is indicated that it has a 5-year warranty but the truth is that the brand has updated it to 10 years. Good period, no doubt…

On the back, more information about the PSU is indicated, including efficiency and fan profile data. 80 Plus Gold certificate, DC-DC converters, FDB fan… Everything looks good.

We must say that the data of the protections is incomplete and that in reality the source is prepared for much more. Between this and the 5-year warranty, which is actually 10, could you review the marketing of this power supply, since it highlights fewer capabilities than it really has?

The protection of the packaging is very complete and should you avoid cases of DOA (Dead on Arrival)?

We remove the protagonist from her protective cover and we find a very aggressive source in her aesthetics, due to her beautiful white paint. The brand "Gamerstorm" appears very clearly defined.

On the fan side, the silver "G" is interesting, although the truth is that this fountain is made to be mounted with the fan facing down in boxes that mount it at the bottom. But the truth is that, like it or not, the aesthetic does not leave anyone indifferent. Do you like it? We do, but we want to know your opinion in the comments?

Keep in mind that the white aesthetic is only present in the 750W model. Those of 650 and 850 have a black paint.

But hey, let's remember that beauty is inside, especially when we talk about sources. Then we will see what is inside…

As we said, this is a completely modular source, which means that we will only use the essential cables. It is necessary to clarify that, as occurs in the vast majority of sources in this range (and unfortunately) each PCIe cable includes 2 connectors of 6 + 2 pins, and not one as would be ideal.

Deepcool has opted for 100% flat wiring for the DQ750-M which, unsurprisingly, is black. How well it would have been painted white! The very good news is that these cables do not include additional filtering capacitors, something that most of their competitors do and that for us only serves to earn points in certain reviews. We do the opposite, we applaud that these capacitors are not included since they can make the task of organizing the wiring quite difficult.

Deepcool includes the following number of connectors in this font:

  • 1 ATX 2 EPS 8-pin (2 x (4 + 4)) 4 PCIe 6-pin 2 (4 x (6 + 2)) 7 SATA6 Molex 4-pin

The number of connectors is more than adequate, although we do not like that in all the SATA cable strips there are some Molex. In most assemblies you don't need any, or at most 1 single 4-pin Molex.

We should also mention that 20AWG cables have been used instead of 18AWG in SATA / Molex strips, which means that it is a thinner cable with poorer electrical properties. It can be a problem for anyone who uses, for example, 6/8 pin adapters for graphics cards, but nobody in their right mind would do that in a € 120 source that already brings 4 PCIe, so we are not concerned.

Distribution of the 12V rails

Today, a multi-rail source (except for low-quality models) is safer than one with a single 12V rail.

However, it requires taking into account the distribution of the rails to avoid problems with components with high energy consumption. Here we discuss if DeepCool has properly distributed the rails in this source.

  • The first 12V rail can hold up to 25A (300W), and powers the motherboard and hard drives. With the digital source that we use as a reference, we can measure the consumption in the equivalent of this rail, and we never exceed 120W by stressing the graphics by the PCIe slot. The maximum peak of an HDD is usually around 2A and hardly occurs at power-up… Come on, this band to spare. On the CPU side (of 1 of the 2 8-pin EPS connectors), we have again a maximum of 25A (300W), completely left over since 1 EPS alone cannot with as much power. Now there are curves, since the 12V3 and 12V4 share rail with the second 8-pin EPS (if used). Each of these rails has a maximum of 35A, or 420W. If you use a RTX 2080 Ti graphics card, it is recommended (just in case) to use two cables on two different rails. We have consulted other sources and the actual limit of these round 41A rails, so effectively with certain models of 1080Ti / Vega 64 / RTX 2080 Ti it is advisable to separate into two rails. This raises two things: 1) Close the door for SLI / Crossfire from these charts. But was anyone really going to do it with a 750W source? 2) It forces to use two cables where in each one a connector remains. Yes, but this is in line with the recommendation of other large manufacturers, who say that it is necessary to use them with these GPUs even if their sources are single-rail.

In summary, the distribution of the 12V rails is adequate, and does not pose many more limitations than a single-rail source, but keep in mind:

Try not to share any component rail. That is, if you use 2 PCIe cables and 1 EPS, each one is on a separate rail. If you are forced to share two connectors, do not worry too much as it is difficult to reach the limit. But it is something to keep in mind.

Maybe the explanation is a bit messy, but good. Now it's time to see the insides of the DQ750-M, have they done a good job?

Internal analisis

The manufacturer of this font is CWT, a company that manufactures for many other brands such as Corsair, Bitfenix, Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake, and more. It is capable of producing sources of all qualities, in this case the internal platform used is the one known as “GPU”, probably the best one they have in this efficiency range. Is it, then, great news?

This platform makes use of the technologies expected for this price, LLC on the primary side and DC-DC on the secondary side. The best in efficiency and voltage regulation.

The primary filter is made up of 4 Y capacitors, 2 X capacitors and 2 coils. These components have a dual function that is essential: on the one hand, to filter a little the imperfect current that enters the electrical network, and on the other, to prevent the source from “returning” electromagnetic interference to the network. We could make a simile with a border control.

Additionally, a MOV or varistor (hidden in the photo) is used to reduce surges, and a relay- supported NTC thermistor to reduce current spikes when turning on the source. The latter is responsible for hearing a 'click' every time we turn the equipment on or off, something that is totally normal.

The primary condenser is Japanese and is manufactured by Nippon Chemi-Con, which belongs to the KMR series and resists up to 105ºC. Its capacity is 560uF and, although there are no references on whether it is sufficient at this power, the data for the 650 and 850W models in Cybenetics ('Hold-up time') indicate that its capacity is lower than desired. It is not a great drama but it is noteworthy.

On the secondary side, the most important one, we find 100% Japanese capacitors (Nippon Chemi-Con) where we distinguish a large number of solid capacitors (those with a small strip of colors in their capsule, from FPCAP). With its inclusion we can ensure that its durability will be very extensive, as it happens on the primary side.

CWT has put a lot of effort into the protections of the DQ750-M, so we have two supervisory circuits, the Weltrend WT7518D and the Sitronix ST9S429-PG14.

This time we will not be taking a look at the soldering quality of the PCB, although what we see on the modular board is quite decent, and is basically what you can expect from CWT.

We finish by taking a look at the 120mm Deepcool fan, with dynamic fluid bearings. We do not know its durability since we do not know who has manufactured it, but with the 10-year guarantee that Deepcool gives, we will surely be able to rest easy. Highlight the special design of the blades that surely helps in the cooling. According to the brand, it is patented.

Test bench and performance tests

We have carried out tests to regulate the voltages, consumption and speed of the fan. To do this, we have been helped by the following team:

TESTING BENCH

Processor:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (OC)

Base plate:

MSI X370 Xpower Gaming Titanium.

Memory:

16GB DDR4

Heatsink

Corsair H100i Platinum RGB

HDD

Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

Seagate Barracuda HDD

Graphic card

Gigabyte R9 390

Reference Power Supply

NZXT E650

The measurement of voltages is real, since it is not extracted from Software but from a UNI-T UT210E multimeter. For consumption we have a Brennenstuhl meter and a laser tachometer for fan speed.

Test scenarios

The tests are divided into several scenarios, in order from lowest to highest consumption.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Kolink Enclave 500W Review in Spanish (Complete Analysis)
CPU load GPU charging Real consumption
Scenario 1 None (at rest) ~
Scenario 2 Prime95 None ~
Scenario 3 None FurMark ~
Scenario 4 Prime95 FurMark ~

Fan speed tests are performed with an overclock at 1.35V, while the last consumption scenario is done at 1.4625V, exceeding 500W of actual consumption at maximum load.

In order to maintain the reliability of the tests, especially the consumer one (the most sensitive), and taking into account the changing nature of the loads on a device, the sources shown here have been tested the same day and in the same situations, so we always retest the source that we use as a reference, so that the results are comparable within the same review. Between different reviews there may be variations due to this.

In addition, we try to put more and more stress on power supplies, so from one review to another the components used and the overclock applied may vary. In fact, we have just changed the GPU to an even higher consumption R9 390, and added liquid cooling to be able to overclock our CPU.

Voltages

Nothing abnormal in the control of voltages.

Consumption

Consumption is adequate in an 80 Plus Gold source.

Note that we have taken the opportunity to test whether the multi-rail system left a good current margin, and we have done the tests with the CPU and GPU under the same 12V rail, and we have not experienced a single shutdown. We even raised the bar of the OC getting a consumption on the wall of 670W (probably a "Scenario 5" in future reviews).

Fan speed and loudness

We have not been able to check the RPM at which the fan rotates, as our laser tachometer does not work with white fans.

The Deepcool DQ750-M is quiet, but perhaps not enough for the most demanding users.

This is one of several models available on the market that do not go for a semi-passive mode, something that is not necessarily bad since many of them are even quieter than semi-passive sources, since a source with a fan constantly spinning at low revs is better than one that suffers from random ignition loops at high revs, a problem experienced by some semi-passive sources.

In any case, what it is time to comment on is not theory but practice, and this Deepcool source has not left us with bad feelings about its sound. However, we expected something better since its loudness at low loads does not manage to position itself in a “virtually inaudible” noise level that we have observed in other sources that also keep the fan always active.

When in doubt, we have checked the loudness data from Cybenetics on the 650 and 850W models, and in both the fan starts at about 750 revolutions per minute, which is a high figure for a source with these capabilities. Due to its efficiency and quality, it does not need such aggressive cooling, it could lower the profile of the fan and make it quieter without losing in this aspect.

Final words and conclusion on Deepcool DQ750-M

It's time to recap, and without a doubt two of the most notable factors in this range of sources are internal quality and protections. Collaboration with manufacturer CWT has resulted in an amazing quality product with advanced technologies and great components, including 100% Japanese capacitors and excellent Infineon MOSFETs.

Moving to protections, this is one of the few sources currently available that has 12V OCP protection, a characteristic feature of quality multi-rail sources, an additional layer of protection to safeguard our components. In addition, we have not missed anything, everything we could ask for in this regard is included.

The sound of this source is good, but it does not stand out from other competitors. The management of the wiring is really comfortable except for the case of the SATA connectors, where we see an improved distribution: in all the strips SATA and Molex are combined, when many users will not need any of the latter.

We recommend reading our guide to the best sources for PC 2018.

The recommended price of the Gamerstorm DQ750-M is 119 euros. We believe that it is a very acceptable price and according to its characteristics, although if it were reduced a little we believe that it would be on the podium of the best quality-price sources on the market. In any case, this is a launch that Deepcool should be proud of, since the quality, guarantee, benefits and protections of this source have definitely earned a place in the market.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Enviable internal quality with a protection system that lacks nothing. 10-year guarantee. Reasonable price and according to its benefits. Flat cables, without capacitors and comfortable to organize.
  • Upgradeable SATA connector layout. Slightly high initial fan speed (750rpm):(
