Design and unboxing

The Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit comes in a white cardboard box with standard dimensions. On its cover we see an image that incorporates two high-speed Wi-Fi bridges.

While in the rear area we have all the most important technical characteristics detailed, which offers us a three-year warranty and is developed in Germany.

Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit is a WiFi bridge that has been designed to improve the coverage of our wireless network in those situations where it is not ideal. Many times we have different devices such as computers, consoles, smartphones, tablets and many more connected to a WiFi network that is not capable of providing sufficient coverage for optimal operation in all of them at once. Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit offers us a transfer speed of up to 2 Gbps so it will allow us to take full advantage of the speed of our network on all types of devices.

Despite its great characteristics, it has a very compact size of only 150 x 140 x 30 mm so you can place it anywhere, in addition, its design is very attractive so it will not clash whether you place it in the living room or anywhere other part. Energy efficiency is another very important point where it does not disappoint with a maximum consumption of only 24W at full power (2A, 12V). Regarding security, it offers WPA / WPA2 encryption and the possibility of WPS pairing.

The company has chosen to create a premium product, its design is very modern with the typical shiny plastic. This material has its drawbacks: it scratches just by looking at it.

While the front we have a main button that allows us to synchronize with the rest of the satellites. This is very important, since without it we will not be able to pair the satellites.

Once seen the base, we go into greater detail about the satellite that it incorporates. Specifically, the Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit includes five RJ45 LAN ports along with a high-speed Gigabit port (only the first is 10/100/1000, the rest are 10/100) so that you can enjoy all the advantages of wired connection in up to six different devices.

For the rest of devices such as tablets, smartphones and laptops it has its advanced WiFi network with powerful coverage, this network is capable of covering an area of up to 300 square meters. With this you can be in the comfort of your living room enjoying the best video quality in straming without cuts or interruptions due to the lack of speed on the network.

The station, unlike the base, offers us a greater number of LED identifications. but also on its front we have two buttons: button to activate the WPS (we do not recommend activating it) and the synchronization button with the base.

How many stations can we install to a Devolo GigaGate base? Nothing more and nothing less than 8 stations. In other words, we can offer great coverage, throughout a community of neighbors. It will also allow us to do other demanding tasks at the same time as playing online, browsing and even doing other streaming sessions in other parts of the house.

To achieve this, the Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit uses modern and advanced Quantenna 4 × 4 MIMO technology to provide a precise and powerful point-to-point connection through a 5 GHz band that offers us the maximum speed of 1733 mbps. Its 2.4 GHz 2 × 2 MIMO band is capable of providing up to 3000 Mbps to all devices that are not compatible with 5G Wifi networks.

Installation and configuration

Its installation is extremely simple, we just have to place the device, connect it and we can immediately enjoy the best high-speed internet connection.

The kit includes a base bridge and a satellite bridge that connect to each other with a speed of 2 Gbps thanks to the 5 GHz band. The base bridge connects directly to the router using an Ethernet cable, the satellite bridge will be placed near the devices that we want to have access to your WiFi or wired network of the best quality.

Its compatibility is maximum including all the routers on the market and a multitude of multimedia devices such as console, smart TV, computer, tablet, smartphone, NAS, cloud, server and many more.

Thanks to the integration of AES encryption our network will be protected against access by third parties. As we have previously mentioned, we can extend its functionality with up to a maximum of 8 satellite points to achieve unsurpassed coverage throughout our home.

Management software

The management software in charge of connecting to the control panel and seeing the status of the base / stations is Devolo Cockpit. It is fully compatible with Windows 10/8/7, Mac OSX and Linux.

Once we enter the control panel of the base. We can see the most basic states in the "Overview of states" section. Also see the service that the bridges offer each other and some very basic settings.

The Devolo GigaGate Starter Kit offers us the possibility of expanding coverage in our home quickly without the need for cables or works. As simple as connecting the station to our router and associating the base, we will already have much more extensive coverage in our home.

In our tests we have been able to verify that it offers the most that a Wifi 4 x 4 can offer and the result is really good. With wireless connection we have obtained 4.54 MBytes per second, while by cable we have improved to 50 MBytes per second. We liked it a lot, as it is a practical solution and can be installed by people who do not have advanced computer skills. Great work Devolo!

The main drawback is that it incorporates a single Gigabit connection per network and the rest is 10/100. This reminds us of other routers such as Xiaomi, which leave these connections slower to reduce costs (it is not so expensive) and because many electronic devices (televisions, mini-entertainment PCs or consoles) do not need more capacity.

Its price in a fragrant store ranges from 225 euros for the starter kit: base + repeater satellite. For each extra satellite you have to pay a supplement of +139 euros.
