The Ducky One 2 RGB, one of the latest mechanical keyboards produced by the Ducky Channel, falls into our hands. It offers good quality materials, individual RGB lighting by key and switches of the infallible Cherry MX. Do you want to know more? Take a look.
The Taiwanese brand is no ugly duckling in the world of PC peripherals, quite the contrary: its fame is due to its production and design of mechanical keyboards.
Unboxing of Ducky One 2 RGB
You know we love looking at the boxes. It is a vice that is at your service and has certain advantages. The packaging of the Ducky One 2 RGB features the logo in its upper right corner and also the name of the range, One 2. Both have a metallic finish with a slightly pink tone and are accompanied by a central illustration with details highlighted in resin.
For its part, on the back we find again the logo of the brand and model line as well as the most important data referring to its technical specifications (detailed in the initial table). In the lower right area are the certificates for Cherry MX switches and keycaps made by double injection.
Box contents:
- Ducky One 2 RGB Removable USB type A / C cable Key extractor Warranty User manual Alternative keys to replace: direction buttons, Enter, backspace (x 2), Esc, Ducky image, Hanzhi "pig" and space bar.
Ducky One 2 RGB design
The Ducky One 2 RGB is a sturdy, 1400g keyboard that certainly won't move easily from the table by accident. The entrance design has a matte finish with black plastic finishes on its upper side and white on the lower side.
Frame
Many may find it surprising that even though the keyboard is plastic on the outside, its total weight is so high. We conclude that inside the chassis on which the switches and circuits are installed is made of aluminum. The plastic of the casing is ABS, one of the materials that offers the best quality against heat, sweat and the passage of time. Currently it offers very good benefits in the peripheral world and its use is very widespread.
Looking at it from the side we can notice the underlying ergonomics in the structure of the keys, a classic that goes unnoticed in the vertical view but that becomes evident if we place it on its side. Aside from the lift lugs, the frame itself features a natural tilt that raises the back span of the keyboard.
The keys are supported on the switch just above the surface of the box frame. It is possible to see white illuminated LEDs that act as a sneaker for capitalization and numeric keypad activation.
In its rear area we can see the model name: Ducky One 2 RGB screen printed in black and red and the cable connection, which is removable. Furthermore, the change in the frame color from black to white is already visible on the sides of the structure.
Right in the center, the entry of the removable USB Type-C cable is observable, which sinks slightly into the structure of the roof so as not to leave the plug exposed on the outside.
If we turn it over, we see that the base is already completely white. Its four non-slip rubber bands stand out in addition to the rear connection point of the cable, which advances to almost half of the structure.
On its lifting legs, it is noteworthy to note that we find two overlapping variants that offer two alternative heights according to user preferences, complemented by the default position of the keyboard itself. All of them have in turn black non-slip rubber trim.
In the center we find an aluminum plate where the brand logo, model of the Ducky One 2 series, as well as the manufacturer's web address and some stamps such as the European Quality Certificate are engraved.
Finally it is necessary to point out for the enthusiastic nerds the presence of a “Switch Selector” (DIP Switch).
By combining the positions of the four available switches ( Switch 1, 2, 3 and 4) following the table it is possible to make a layout change of the distribution of symbols (Fn, Pn, CapsLock, R Ctrl…) and characters on the keyboard and so adapt them to different formats (Colemak, Dvorak and Qwerty).
Switches
The main course for many, although what are we going to tell you about Cherry MX that you do not already know. The quality of the brand switches is more than known, as is the durability and resistance of mechanical switches in general. For the Ducky One 2 RGB it is possible to find in Spain its three star variants: red, blue and brown. In our case we bring you the red model, a linear switch specially designed for gaming .
Above the switches we have double injection keycaps made of ABS, one of the most efficient polymers in the industry. This guarantees us a good longevity in the reading of its RGB backlit characters and will avoid for a long time the slimy touch that the keys tend to acquire with use.
As we mentioned at the beginning, in the box we can find a series of alternative keys by which to replace the ones that come by default on the keyboard.
In red we can find:
- Chinese Han Zhi Pig Esc Imagologist Ducky Backspace Enter Directional Arrows ← ↑ ↓ → Numeric Enter
These keys have a desaturated red finish with white symbols. In your case unfortunately they do not have a backlight once installed. To make the change, we have the key extractor included in the box.
The alternative space bar that is offered to us instead has a much more personalized design. In it we see the stylized representation of a wild boar or wild pig running around on a plain. This key does have a double mold ABS finish that allows the design to be backlit. Also observable is the brand name in the upper right corner and the Han Zhi miniature representing the word pig.
The wire
The cable of the Ducky One 2 RGB is presented to you covered in rubber, which gives it a good thickness. As details, the transparent PVC protective covers for both USB ports are observable, as well as a white velcro band with which we can wind the excess cable or save it for transport.
This cable has a total length of 127 cm, which leaves it somewhat short compared to other models. However, it has the advantage that although its connection to the keyboard is through its central area, in the structure of the base we find two channels that allow us to divert it to the right and left at the user's convenience.
Putting Ducky One 2 RGB into use
When we connect the Ducky One 2 RGB for the first time to our team, the LEDs blink three times before set to the default default lighting. The distribution of its keys and its size are very similar to the industry average and the plastic frame that serves as our chassis offers a very good presence with its matte finish.
The pulsations in the switches are done comfortably and smoothly. Those of you who come from Outemu or Kailh switches will probably notice a subtle change in keystrokes when the switch goes back. The Ducky One 2 RGB features anti-ghosting of up to six simultaneous keys, making it extremely difficult to encounter a false press situation.
The keyboard of course allows the creation and administration of up to six macros, but apparently these are only configurable on the fly since there is no section for use in the program provided on the official website, where we can customize the lighting in great depth. Regarding the cable, the possibility of diverting it to the right or left and even keeping it in the center offers a very good flexibility to all users when it comes to arranging their desk.
software
Accompanying the Ducky One 2 RGB we also have the possibility to download the Ducky RGB software from its Official Website. This program is easy to install and has a direct, simple and totally Spanish interface to the relief of many.
Ducky RGB software is supported only on the Windows operating system. However, we find this software somewhat limited given that the number of options to customize it offers is exclusively aimed at configuring RGB lighting. There are a total of six LED profiles available and within them we can from choosing one of the patterns already included by default to modifying them or creating your own. In this regard, we can affirm that it fulfills its function correctly despite its other shortcomings.
illumination
The soul of the party. You already know our opinion about LED lights on keyboards: we cannot live without them. The reading of all your backlit switches is quite clear even if they are turned off. Both the letters and the symbols have a pleasant thickness that allows a considerable passage of light. The RGB of this keyboard is by individual LED and it is possible to receive light reflection from the edges of the letters.
This effect is reinforced by the fact that the internal plastic mold under the switches is also white, which facilitates a mirror effect that intensifies its colors. This we can especially notice if we compare a black keyboard in its internal area.
As mentioned in the switches section, the variants offered in red do not have a backlight, although it is the color itself that guides us in low-light environments to differentiate them from the rest.
As it could not be missed, apart from the RGB lighting of the keyboard we can find three powerful white LEDs that tell us the use of capital letters or numerical lock.
Finally, the space bar variant is undoubtedly the switch that makes the most of its ABS design, gaining a lot of prominence when it is illuminated.
Final words and conclusions about Ducky One 2 RGB
The Ducky One 2 RGB keyboard is consistent in its construction. We can find in it nice details like Cherry MX switches and interchangeable keycaps. The software introduction is also a nice touch and includes many different options to customize the RGB patterns, although we miss a section of macros so we don't have to create them on the fly . The Cherry MX are as always a safe bet and represent one of the strongest points of this keyboard since they are practically foolproof switches. Also here in Spain we are offered the possibility to choose between three of its colors: red, blue and brown.
The lighting on the other hand is pleasant, being able to modify its intensity, direction, speed, pattern and color. The Ducky RGB software takes good care of managing these options through a simple and direct interface that makes it very manageable for novice users to such inquiries. On the other hand, it adds a total of three possible heights to regulate, although it does not have palm rests. The good thing is that its standard measurements make it possible to be compatible with a generic one on the market if it is your preference.
We recommend reading: Best keyboards on the market.
Something that is also noteworthy for fans who spend toying peripherals is the inclusion on the back of a DIP Switch panel to alter the keyboard layout to convenience. However, this is something that the general public will not take great advantage of, but those more advanced will appreciate the detail.
In terms of price, the Ducky One 2 RGB launches from € 122.90. We understand that a three-digit number is not suitable for all budgets. It is up to the user to decide if it is worth it for the benefits it offers. For those whose budget gets out of hand, you can also find other models from the brand itself at a lower price.
