Updated roadmaps from Intel confirm that the current Z370 chipset will soon be withdrawn from the market. The new Z390 chipset brings a handful of new features such as support for USB 3.1 and optional support for Wirelesss-AC. Not that this is particularly innovative, and in fact some motherboard manufacturers comment that it is basically a renowned Z370.

The first Intel Z390 motherboards will arrive very soon

This new enthusiast chipset was designed with future 8-core processors to come with the Core 9000 series, currently known as the Coffee Lake-S series.

The road maps that we show today are clearly out of date, with the exception of the Z390 reference. The 8th generation Core series will be replaced by the 9th generation Core series, which has already been officially confirmed by Intel. These roadmaps lack any reference to the 9th generation Core series.

The same could be said of the X299 platform. The upcoming HEDT series roadmap lacks Cascade Lake X for socket LGA3467, which have already been demonstrated at Computex this year. Therefore, Basin Falls Refresh would be a Skylake-X 'Refresh', which could have been abandoned at this time. Or maybe, will we have both? Only time will tell.

What is clear is that the Z390 chipset motherboards should be arriving in the next two months, already widely prepared for the new series of Intel processors, although the current Z370 are also prepared by a simple BIOS update.
