According to the latest information originating in South Korea, Samsung's next flagship, the 2018 Galaxy S9, may not have a fingerprint reader under the screen as has been speculated so far. Instead, the fingerprint scanner will be incorporated into the back of the device, just like its predecessor, the current Galaxy S8.

On-screen fingerprint reader will have to wait

The biggest question asked at the moment refers to the future placement of the fingerprint reader on smartphones. Virtually all smartphone manufacturers move in the direction of designs with elongated screens and almost frameless bodies. Thus, there is no longer room for a fingerprint scanner on the front of the phone, which is why most companies, including Samsung, have decided to take it to the back, while Apple has chosen to remove it entirely.

The problem with having the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone is that it can be uncomfortable at times, but perhaps most importantly, you can no longer unlock your phone with a simple touch and use it without lifting it from the surface. For this reason, many users are waiting for the arrival of a fingerprint scanner integrated into the terminal screen. It is not an impossible technology, but it does pose difficulties, some security problems and, above all, if the person who succeeds will be able to produce the necessary component in a significant way.

First the Galaxy S8 was discussed, then attention turned to the Galaxy Note 8. In both cases, the fingerprint reader under the screen has not appeared. So the rumors continued to point towards the company's next flagship, the 2018 Galaxy S9, and while it would have been nice to see this technology in it, the latest rumor claims that Samsung won't be able to incorporate it into the Galaxy S9 in time but, Once again, the fingerprint reader will be included on the back of the terminal, just like on the Galaxy S8. However, it is still unclear whether it will keep the current position next to the camera.

With these news, the Galaxy Note 9 now acquires a greater programme as the strongest candidate to be the first Samsung terminal that could include the fingerprint reader under its screen, although for this we will still have to wait, at least, until the end of next summer.
