Synaptics Clear ID is a new and great leap forward in fingerprint reader technology for smartphones, the great novelty of this device is that it is the first sensor of this type to be integrated under the screen so it can be used in the most advanced and modern terminals in a much simpler way.

Synaptics Clear ID revolutionizes fingerprint sensors

The new fingerprint sensor consists of a small CMOS sensor that is located under the screen of the smartphone. In this way the sensor is able to take advantage of the brightness of the screen itself to capture a sharp image of the user's fingerprints. The main drawback is that its use is limited to a screen with a maximum thickness of 1.5 mm, so it can only be used with OLED panels.

Synaptics states that this new reader is capable of taking samples in high resolution, although it does not specify an exact figure, its energy efficiency is very high since it only uses 80 mA to operate. To this must be added the energy consumed by the AMOLED screen itself, Synaptics has not specified a minimum brightness figure that is needed for the sensor to function properly.

The Face ID of the iPhone X faces the Face Unlock of the OnePlus 5T

Synaptics Clear ID only needs 0.7 seconds to be able to take a sample of the user's fingerprint and process it, a great advance compared to the 1.4 seconds that facial recognition systems used in some terminals such as the iPhone X use.

Apple could be the first to use this new Synaptics Clear ID in the new terminals that it presents this year, in the iPhone X it has had to choose a slower facial recognition system since this new reader was not yet available.
