Amazon, Newegg and Walmart already sell Intel's NUC Crimson Canyon which is based on the Cannon Lake Core i3-8121U processor, produced using the company's 10nm process technology. The availability of this at major retailers indicated that Intel is making its 10nm CPUs in fairly large volumes.

Intel's NUC Crimson Canyon with a Core i3-8121U Cannon Lake is already selling in bulk

Intel's Crimson Canyon NUCs feature Intel's dual-core Core i3-8121U processor paired with 4GB or 8GB of AMD LPDDR4-2666 memory and AMD's Radeon 540, based on the Polaris architecture with 512 SPs and with 2 GB of GDDR5. The computer comes with a 1TB SATA hard disk, but it also has an M.2-2280 slot for a SATA or PCIe SSD.

When it comes to connectivity, the new NUCs are equipped with Intel's Wireless-AC 9560 CNVi 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 5 solution that supports up to 1.73 Gbps over 160 MHz channels. Additionally, the systems have a GbE, two HDMI 2.0a outputs, four USB 3.0 Type A ports, an SD card reader, a TRRS headphone audio jack, and a digital audio jack for 7.1-channel sound.

Intel's NUC Crimson Canyon were announced several months ago and were available at smaller retail stores, possibly because volumes were not large. Availability at Amazon and Walmart indicates that Intel is now able to offer relatively large volumes of its chips produced at a 10nm node. When it comes to performance, Cannon Lake has its advantages, like AVX-512 compatibility, although they may not be as obvious in the SFF space as in the HPC / HEDT space.

AMD's Radeon 540 should also be faster than Intel's UHD 630 Graphics in gaming, but when it comes to media playback, contemporary Intel iGPUs have certain advantages over AMD's Polaris, for example VP9 decoding of 10-bit, support for sophisticated copyrights and protection methods required by Intel SGX.

The Intel NUC8i3CYSM with 4GB of RAM and 1TB HDD currently costs $ 540 at Amazon.com.
