AMD is in for the job of winning the core battle with its upcoming Ryzen 3000 series processors. A new leak from TUM_APISAK reveals that there are already engineering samples of a Zen 2 based 16 core Ryzen 9 and that it is already being tested with the X570 motherboards.

With about 16 cores, the next Ryzen 9 would have twice as many cores as the i9-9900K

When AMD first showed off its third generation of Ryzen processors at CES, one thing was for sure: AMD was going to increase the number of cores available on its chips on AM4. With the new chiplet design, it would be relatively easy for AMD to add more cores to its architecture.

The source also reveals that the processor's base clock speed is 3.3 GHz, while it can reach 4.2 GHz at full load, which is not far below AMD's current Threadripper 2950X processor, which has a clock rate / boost of 3.5 / 4.4 GHz. Not bad for a CPU with socket AM4.

As an engineering sample, the clock speeds of this product should not be considered definitive, but they are certainly impressive. With the jump to 7nm, AMD would have more room to double the number of cores without compromising power consumption too much, and thus continue using existing AM4 motherboards.

AMD is expected to release more information on the Zen 2 architecture at Computex 2019, with recent rumors suggesting these processors will go on sale in July. We will keep you informed.
