It has been rumored for a long time that the PlayStation 5 will be released 'soon', let's say within the next 2 years, and the latest rumors indicate that the AMD APU processor in charge of being the brain of the future Sony console, will enter phase very soon of production.

PlayStation 5 would own a Ryzen-based 8-core AMD APU processor

Among all the rumors and speculation, it seems more than likely that the PlayStation 5 will go on sale in late 2020. This, unsurprisingly, will be preceded or closely followed by Microsoft's next-gen console, codenamed Scarlett.

In a PCGamesN report, it seems to reveal that the development of the PS5 is about to enter a new phase, as is the production of the AMD APU processor.

Sony abandons the AMD Jaguar architecture used in PlayStation 4

The APU would be based on an AMD Ryzen processor. However, it will specifically seek to implement the same APU design that was exceptionally popular at the launch of Ryzen's second generation. Since this APU will be a custom design, it cannot, of course, be tied to any specific Ryzen range or generation. However, it is believed to be largely based on second generation designs.

Going into the spec realm, PlayStation 5 would have an 8-core APU processor that would run at around 3.2 GHz. At the time of this writing, it's unclear which version of the Zen architecture it will be using.

Either way, the jump from AMD Jaguar, used in PS4 / Pro would be substantial, due to all the better ones imposed on the AMD Zen architecture.
