Although most still tend to associate the term AI with voice assistants, the technology industry as a whole has made great strides behind the scenes, optimizing all sorts of tasks, such as image recognition and graphic representation, through the use of AI. Samsung with its future Galaxy S10 wants to give it more prominence in the field of smartphones.

The effort to implement AI seems to be in its infancy, but Samsung plans to take a big step forward with its next phone in this area.
The Korean giant is apparently ready to implement the second generation of its own neural processing unit (NPU) chip, as suggested by various sources. More recently, a LinkedIn profile of one of his former employees is hinting.
Several manufacturers are putting a lot of effort to improve AI in smartphones
We can expect the NPU unit to make its debut on the upcoming Exynos 9820 SoC chip, and consequently the Samsung Galaxy S10 family. We know that Samsung typically uses Qualcomm chips for its Galaxy series in the United States and other markets. In this case, Qualcomm is also trying to add an NPU unit to its next Snapdragon 8150 SoC.
As we mentioned earlier, the entire mobile industry is working hard on AI processing and related hardware to handle workloads. Both Huawei and Apple seem to be working on it, with their own NPU configurations.
The A12 Bionic has its 8-core Neural Engine, capable of 5 trillion operations per second, while the Kirin 980 has a new Dual NPU that can process 4500 images per minute. Clearly, the race is still wide open, as there isn't even a unified workload scenario or adequate metric to directly compare the two. Still, it is clear that AI will only grow and become more and more important.
