In a recent interview with GameSpot, Colin Penty, technical director of art for Gears 5, revealed new information about Microsoft's next generation of Xbox consoles, Project Scarlett, which is powered by an AMD SoC chip.

Xbox Scarlett, the next console from Microsoft, will have cores dedicated to Ray Tracing

In this interview, Penty stated that "Having cores dedicated to Ray Tracing is huge, " confirming that the next console called Project Scarlett has dedicated Ray Tracing hardware. Given that AMD has confirmed that it is working on hardware accelerated technology, these cores are likely to be part of the next generations of AMD Radeon.

Although Penty was unable to explain Scarlett's specifications, her statement reconfirmed that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox would include dedicated Ray Tracing hardware. This indicates the importance that this technology will have in the next generation games, for consoles and also for PC.

Beyond that, it also seems likely that AMD's next-generation RDNA graphics cards will also have similar "dedicated cores".

Microsoft's Project Scarlett will be powered by AMD Zen 2 CPU cores and Radeon RDNA graphics hardware. The console will launch during the end of the year 2020, so it is likely that we will see Radeon GPUs with Ray Tracing or similar characteristics in the same period of time.

This will result in one of the main features of the Microsoft console, although at this time it remains to be seen how developers will use this functionality. The next generation of Sony's PlayStation is likely to offer the same feature set as well, ushering in a new graphics era powered by consoles. We will keep you informed.
