Elementary OS is a combination of several interesting aspects. It has managed to position itself as one of the most attractive distributions, especially for those who want to take their first steps in GNU / Linux. Ubuntu is its parent distribution (so to speak) but visually transforms it entirely.

Redesign in the display of the system configuration. Now we can search for any setting using a search box and it will appear according to matches. As its developers say, the entire interface was made simpler and "straightforward". Because of this, they added a new design for the network configuration. In addition to this, it provides us with options to create VPNs, access points and proxy connections Online accounts. From now on, we can link an IMAP email or FastMail account with the system Parental control. An excellent option that will allow administrative accounts to set limits to normal users. Not only to restrict usage time, but also to block certain web addresses or applications. Epiphany is now the default browser for the Elementary OS Loki operating system. We decided to download this new version of the distribution, in order to test it and thus have and give you a general idea about it. The tests are carried out on a Lenovo G50-80 laptop. With the following specifications: Intel Core i5-5200U @ 2.20 GHz CPU and 8 GB of RAM .
So was the beginning.
Desk
At first glance, Elementary OS Loki seems cleaner and more organized. The interface is one of the most beautiful Linux desktop environments. If there is something to highlight, it is that the group of developers has made a great effort to achieve this type of user interface.
The applications menu is faster. Now, it presents a better search box and display options:
Browser
As I already mentioned, the default web browser is now Epiphany. It is actually the default browser in GNOME and uses the WebKit engine.
I particularly don't like this app. I don't know if any of you would like it? . In my case, the first thing I would do would be to delete it and install something like Firefox or Chrome. Why? because they offer much better interfaces and endless plugins or extensions, which add much more to the functionality.
When you open the "Mail" application, a simple window will appear. In this we must enter our data.
After that, the application will start showing the emails. We can also integrate it with the system accounts, which will allow us to receive email notifications, which is very effective.
The new message dialog is simple and clean.
Additionally, there is a calendar app for Elementary OS Loki. This allows us to schedule things at a time that suits us.
Audiovisuals
We now continue with the applications for audiovisuals, that is, photos, videos and music.
And the default application "Music" allows us to play music, we can import files from anywhere to wherever we want.
Of course, there is a video app. We checked with an.mp4 file and it worked instantly. Great! no additional codecs are required.
Here is the "Photos" application, which monitors all folders for photos.
Setting
This is the system configuration window, which seems "good" for a control center, which is completely written from scratch by the development team.
From the "Applications" settings, we can choose the default applications in the system, it also allows us to add or remove startup applications from there.
In the desktop tab, we have the option to choose the wallpaper. A great thing about Elementary OS is the funding alternatives it provides. All the default ones to choose from are very cute.
They also present some settings for the Dock.
On the other hand, we can also configure the "hot corners". That is, what kind of actions do we want to occur when those edges are touched by the mouse pointer.
The newest feature in the new version is the notification center, you can configure the application specific notification settings in order to adjust the way you receive them from that application, you can choose to enable or disable the bubbles, sound or save in the notification center.
As for the keyboard configuration, it is quite simple to modify, from the same window. Which makes the story better, compared to GNOME.
On the other hand, it shows us the following for the settings to save energy.
Another point in favor is the network configuration. It is very well organized. It allows us to get to any setting you want about networks, from that same window, we can also establish VPN or connection access points if we want.
A couple of bugs had been detected in the control center. However, the development team realized this quickly and is already operating as normal.
Software Center
There is a new application "AppCenter", which is a software center that allows us to install, update or remove applications.
In the live version, it will be empty, that is, we will not see any of the applications available to install in the software center, only the installed ones.
But that is working fine after installation, in that case if you will see all the programs available to install.

And due to the mentioned error - the fact that there is no program to install software in the live version - we have to use the command line interface to do that, using the apt commands.

This is the "about" tab of Elementary OS Loki, there is a small button here to "restore default settings", in case we would like to return to the default values, just click on this button.

It is very clean and nice looking
There is a "multitasking" button in the Dock, which allows us to manage the different screens. Something similar to the GNOME shell.
And something that was very fun at the end of the review, was the fact of not being able to compress to save the capture files to the dropbox. As is, he could not. There is no option in the context menu, which allows you to compress the files and then share them according to our taste or requirement.

However, I must mention that this bug is only in the live version. At installation this does not happen.
Final words and conclusion on Elementary OS Loki
It cannot be denied that the distribution is really beautiful. But it leaves me the feeling that its default version is not suitable or ready for use. For example, you need to have installed a document manager like LibreOffice or one of its similar ones. Likewise, the fact of those small errors and usability problems (such as compressing the files) should be mitigated, but hey, we can fix all this on the brand. As you know Linux operating systems are completely free and in large distributions there is a great community behind.
Of course, it should be noted that the Elementary team achieved a positive point in desktop development. Regular users - like doctors, teachers, police, banking staff, and more - need beautiful, user-friendly interfaces.
