A Reuters story claims that the United Arab Emirates used a spy tool called "Karma" with which to access the iPhone of activists, diplomats and leaders who are against the regime. This tool was used by the country's cyber operations unit. It is a unit made up of security officials, as well as ex-American intelligence agents.

UAE used a spy tool and hacked some iPhone

This tool has been in use since 2016. Targets include people like Tawakkol Karman from Yemen, winner of a Nobel Peace Prize and one of the leaders in the Arab Spring.

Espionage through iPhone

This tool only worked with iPhone and not with Android phone. It was designed in a way that allowed access to phones simply by adding your number or email account. Sending a text message was enough to infect the phone. Although for now the vulnerability that was exploited is not known. Some claim that it could be a bug in iMessage, but it could not be confirmed. In this way they could obtain data.

Among the data that could be obtained were images, emails, location or text messages. It is not known if Karma is still operating today. It is likely to be so, although due to updates it would be less effective.

So far neither Apple nor the government of the United Arab Emirates have said anything about this alleged case of espionage on the iPhone. Therefore, we hope that in the next few hours there will be more news about this case, which undoubtedly promises to give a lot to talk about.
