How does an ssd disk benefit video games?

Table of contents:

Today's video games are increasingly demanding and require a good processor, a good graphics card, lots of RAM and, perhaps, a good SSD storage device to function as it should.

SSDs seem increasingly necessary in games

SSDs are relatively recent storage devices that come to replace, little by little, traditional hard drives, thanks to the impressive data transfer speeds they offer and because they do not have any type of mechanical mobile components inside, what which makes them safer.

How does a video game SSD benefit?

As it is a super-fast unit, the first benefit at first glance is the loading times. Any video game loads faster on an SSD than on a hard drive of any kind. The bad thing is that SSDs usually have more limited capacities than a hard drive and are also more expensive (a 500GB drive costs 150 euros approx in Spain).

To give you an idea, SSDs usually have transfer speeds of 500 MB / s, while a normal hard drive maintains about 50 MB / s. We can see the impact that these units have with different video games in this comparison:

Can FPS improve?

An SSD cannot directly improve the FPS (frames per second), but it can improve the violent falls of FPS produced by the micro-cuts (or stops) of some demanding or poorly optimized games that happen when it must load a scenario. This is much more noticeable in open world games, where the stage and different elements of the video game are loaded on the go, see titles such as Watch Dogs 2, Batman Arkham Knight or Assassins Creed Origins, just to cite some recent examples.

We recommend reading the best SSDs on the market

In these video games, which are often not well optimized, no matter how much RAM we have in the system or VRAM that our graphics card has, you must always access the disk constantly to load many of the elements. If we have a hard drive, these micro-cuts or stops are going to be unavoidable, but in an SSD drive where data is accessed much more quickly, games would run much more smoothly and seamlessly.

The benefits of this type of super-fast units are there, not only for video games, but also for any other use that we give to our computer. Do you have SSD to play? What benefits do you find with SSDs on your PC?
