DDR4 memory scaling from 2133 to 4000 MHz. RAM is one of the components that undoubtedly influences the performance of our equipment as its speed increases, but to what extent does faster RAM influence better performance?
DDR4 memory scaling and its impact on computer performance
To get out of doubt the guys from Techspot have made a battery of tests in a high-end system led by a two-card GeForce GTX 980Ti SLI in which the only variable to modify has been the operating frequency of the RAM mounted from the 2, 133 MHz to 4, 000 MHz. Thus the system used for testing is as follows:
- Intel Core i7-6700 Skylake @ 4.50GHzAsrock Z170M OC FormulaG.Skill TridentZ 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4-40002x GeForce GTX 980 Ti SLISamsung SSD 950 Pro 512GBSilverstone Strider Series ST1000-G Evolution 1000wWindows 10 Pro 64-bit

Scaling of DDR4 memory from 2133 to 4000 MHz in games
Firstly, the scaling of DDR4 memory has been tested in a battery of the latest generation and very demanding games. The games used have been ARMA 3, CoD Black Ops 3, Civilization Beyond Earth, Fallout 4, Tom Clancy's The Division and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
As we can see in all the games an improvement in performance is seen as the frequency of work of the used RAM memory increases, the cases of greater increase are ARMA 3 and Fallout 4.
Scaling of DDR4 memory from 2133 to 4000 MHz in applications
The test is repeated now but this time with very demanding applications with CPU performance such as 7-Zip, Photoshop, Excel 2013 and Handbrake. Again we see a noticeable performance improvement as the RAM working frequency increases.
Analysis and conclusion of the escalation
Without a doubt we can affirm that the speed of the RAM is a determinant of the performance of a PC both in games and in CPU applications. In the case of games, we see that a GeForce GTX 980Ti SLI improves its performance by increasing the speed of RAM, with 3000 MHz being the point from which the improvement in performance is much less.
If we look at the demanding CPU applications, a very similar trend is observed, as we increase the frequency of RAM, performance improves and a much greater extent than in games, something totally logical. Here too it seems that 3000 MHz is the point from which the improvement is already much less.
We now turn to see the approximate average prices of DDR4 RAM at its different operating frequencies:
8 GB | 16 GB | |
DDR4-4000 | 105 euros | 195 euros |
DDR4-3600 | 65 euros | 130 euros |
DDR4-3000 | 45 euros | 70 euros |
DDR4-2400 | 36 euros | 58 euros |
DDR4-2133 | 32 euros | 54 euros |
Analyzing the price table we conclude that the DDR4-3000 MHz offers the sweet spot in the balance between price and performance, beyond that the price increases greatly but performance does not do so much. This is therefore the recommended frequency of DDR4 RAM to buy, logically if your economy allows you can go for the DDR4-4000 to achieve maximum performance at the cost of a huge over-cost.
