Mobile phones are getting smarter every year, improving their computing power and adding new features. Huawei wants its next phones to be nourished by the Kirin 670 chip, which will bring the first artificial intelligence features to its mid-range smartphones.

Kirin 670 SoC will add artificial intelligence to Huawei's mid-range

For a time, only high-end models get preferential treatment by having special chips called Neural Processing Units, or NPUs, to perform artificial intelligence tasks, but it looks like the Kirin 670 will also be capable to do this once you are on less expensive devices.

Kirin 670 will not be built with the 10nm FinFET node, but you will get high-performance processing cores plus its own NPU.

Huawei will manufacture the Kirin 670 SoC chips with a 12nm manufacturing process, according to the latest information from MyDrivers. Right now, the most capable mid-range chipset the company is developing is the Kirin 659, which will likely be found in the upcoming P20 Lite. Unfortunately, it is equipped with an 8-core Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-T830 GPU that cannot offer the same performance as Snapdragon 600 series.

The Kirin 670 chip wants to improve the mid-range and will have its own NPU, which is the same chip found in the Kirin 970 and powers the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro phones.

As for the specs, the Kirin 670 will feature two Cortex-A72s paired with a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-G72 GPU. We will have to see if it maintains the type compared to the Snapdragon 600 series, but we know that in the future it will outperform the Kirin 659 and bring artificial intelligence functions to more affordable mobile phones.
