Everything that is related to the energy consumption of our equipment is included in the configuration section of Windows power options.

The system automatically configures the equipment for certain actions based on the battery consumption that we have, for example, on a laptop. To access the edition of these configurations we will do the following procedure:

  • We are going to place ourselves on the start button and we are going to right-click on it. A tool menu with a dark gray background will open. If we go to the top, we will see an option that says " Power Options " The configuration window will open on the option " Start / shutdown and suspension "

Here we look at the different options we have, which are not too many, although there is one that interests us.

  • Screen: with this option we will prevent Windows from turning off the screen after a while. We will open the drop-down list and choose "Never" or a value that we want.

  • Suspend: Another function that we can configure from this menu is the possibility that the equipment is automatically suspended after a time. On desktops this option may be " never " but on laptops it will be limited to one time. If we display the list we can choose the option we want.

Open all power options

In this menu there are quite a few options, and it immediately sends us to other windows. For this reason what we are going to do now is show where each and every one of these options are located in detail.

In this way, a window will open in which we will see the same two main options as in the previous case. But in addition to these, if we click on " Change advanced energy settings " we will have all the options that the system gives us

Basically we will have three different profiles in the drop-down list at the top:

  • High performance: in a basic way, the parameters are set to use almost all the resources of the equipment, such as WiFi, hard drives, etc. In this case, the configuration will establish that the screen will turn off in 15 minutes. Economizer: this profile will establish the most restrictive parameters without reaching the maximum of each one. It is intended for laptops. The screen will turn off in Windows 10 after 5 minutes Balanced: in this case, a midpoint will be established between the values ​​of the previous two. Some parameters like sleep will remain off and others will be set with a predetermined time

Power option parameters

Among the most important parameters that we can configure in an energy plan will be the following:

  • Hard disk: the system will be able to turn off the installed hard disks after a few minutes if we wish. Obviously the main hard drive will not shutdown at virtually any time. Desktop background: we can activate or deactivate the presentation mode if we wish. Wireless adapter: like hard drives, we can decide if it turns off after a while. It is also applicable to equipment with Bluetooth. Suspend and screen: already seen USB and PCI Express: we can even turn off the inactive USB ports and PCI Express Start and stop buttons: from here we can decide what function the buttons on our chassis will have (I / O and RESET) Multimedia configuration: from this way we can configure how many resources are destined for multimedia playback, to save energy on the CPU and graphics card. Processor power management: Finally, we can also configure the performance of our processor in relation to the minimum and maximum performance limits.

As we can see, there are quite a few options for configuring the energy profile of our team. It is everyone's decision how to allocate performance and resources to their team.

Obviously we will have to cut a little on portable devices, since otherwise they will drain a lot of battery.
