Far Cry 5 is finally available to plunge you back into chaos as we tour an extensive rural region. Shooting and insanity are assured. Back in 2008, Far Cry 2 proved that Ubisoft could make a good shooter. The icing on the cake came with the third installment and its charismatic villain Vaas. They tried to repeat formula with the fourth installment, but their strange pastel-colored villain did not finish. After that and determined to break the mold, they transferred the well-known gameplay to the Stone Age. With all this, it is not surprising that they seek again to give a twist but keep the identity of the saga. It shows that they wanted to be ambitious and take the gameplay to another level. There are very good and logical changes and others that continue to squeak a bit.
Another charismatic, eccentric villain and this time: religious fanatic
This time we will not find the exotic landscapes of previous installments. But with a somewhat more familiar and worldly territory. Nothing more and nothing less than Hope County in Montana, United States. A religious fanatic named Joseph Seed and who believes himself to be a prophet or Messiah has created a sect with his three brothers who calls himself The Door of Eden. That would be no problem if it were not for the fact that they and their acolytes have seized power in the region and are dedicated to wreaking havoc among anyone who is not one of them. Obviously it is a bit of a surreal plot when locating it within the United States. If it had been set in another part of the globe, perhaps the story would have gained more credibility.
Normally in the United States, they would have sent an army to fix the problem. In this case, no, send a Marshall, a Sheriff and us. As always, things get complicated and we must liberate the region. We alone, for a change.
In previous games our protagonist used to have a past and more or less motivations. In Far Cry 5 that has disappeared at a stroke. The protagonist is ourselves. Without past and without lines of dialogue. So we can only listen to the dialogues and then do what we think is best or we feel like it.
"They have marked you"
After the prologue, we will have total freedom to go to any area of the mapping and carry out the missions in the order we want. My first contact with this way of developing the game reminded me almost instantly of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the map could be subdivided into three regions or zones. Each of them is led by each of Joseph Seed's brothers : John, the eldest; Faith, the middle sister or Jacob, the eldest of them.
One of the best thought-out aspects is the way to face them. Every time we carry out a secondary mission, release a hostage, destroy sect property or release any position, the Resistance Points of the area we are in will increase. As these points rise, enemies will become increasingly hostile. Until, at one point, one of the brothers decides to come after us and we must, in this case, carry out some missions that are mandatory. This gives a point of intensity and tension to the game.
Meanwhile, as the game allows you total freedom, there is no reason to increase only the Resistance Points of a certain area, but we can do it in a sprinkled way. Although once we put a brother to piss off, we will want to get to the meeting with him in order to defeat him.
This form of play gives a more realistic and organic dimension to the gameplay. On the contrary, the story loses a little more integrity and cohesion. It's the same thing that happened to Zelda. It is difficult to offer great freedom without greatly sacrificing the narrative thread.
Not all that glitters is gold
On the other hand, one aspect that takes away from the realism of the game is the possibility of seeing the entire map from the beginning of the game instead of unlocking it as we go through it.
The missions, on the other hand, offer the same known mechanics from the saga. The problem that can be attributed to him is that he sometimes repeats these mechanics too much during the game. Most missions are solved by shooting when stealth is not the most effective. Perhaps for this reason, we will find that there are some very funny and crazy missions. It is certainly a way of not letting the action slow down. As serious as they try to make the game, they take those licenses.
An ally is worth a thousand words
Along the way we will meet a multitude of secondary missions. Some of them very crazy or extravagant, as is common in the saga. In others , by releasing certain NPCs, we can recruit them as allies. We can recruit up to two at a time. Some will be normal allies. But we can also have specialists as allies. Each of them will have a special ability like piloting to help us from the sky, using a rocket launcher, being more difficult to detect. We must emphasize Boomer, the dog that will mark the enemies will attack them and sometimes bring us their weapons.
These will follow us at all times and we can give you different orders depending on what we want. How to stay still, advance, attack, etc. It is a relief to be hurt and an ally to come to the rescue. What is not so funny is when they are hurt and we have to heal them. Which happens more frequently than one would like. The other way to play with an ally, and to which Ubisoft has accustomed us, is together with a friend cooperatively online. The only detail to keep in mind is that the progress of the invited player will not be saved. Only the host's. They should have looked for a way to fix that.
Got talent
No more that of increasing the experience of our character when successfully completing the missions. In Far Cry 5 new skills and improvements are achieved through Talents. And how do you get such talents? Well, there are two ways. One of them is performing challenges while we play. That is, killing a number of enemies with headshots, with a certain weapon, using certain allies, or hunting. Among other challenges. And yes, hunting is no longer good for skinning animals and improving our equipment. We are an agent of the American government, and as such we will use synthetic materials.
The other way to get new Talents is by discovering caches of caches that are scattered around the map and that will sometimes be a little challenge. It will be necessary to investigate well if we want to enter them. But the time invested will be worth it. Inside, apart from weapons and money, we will find some magazines which is what will allow us to level up.
The weapons are one of the aspects that can be customized. We can choose between different colors and vinyls. This is where micropayments come in, not to have a better weapon or anything like that. If not, simply to be able to buy new designs and colors for the weapons. It is appreciated that Ubisoft has implemented them in such a way that it does not affect the story or the multiplayer.
Guaranteed hours of fun
Even taking away everything previously discussed, there will still be things to discover in Hope County. One of the most peculiar actions of Far Cry 5 is to go fishing calmly. And is that the developers have spent many hours and care to recreate this hobby. But if fishing is not your thing, there is always the opportunity to search all the collectibles in the game. To move from one side to another we will have a multitude of vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, tractors, boats, light aircraft and even helicopters. Some will not only serve as a means of transport, but are incorporated with heavy artillery, as is the case with some light aircraft.
If searching for collectables isn't fun for you either, Ubisoft introduced Far Cry Arcade mode. In it we will have the opportunity both to create a map and choose the available weapons and objectives, as well as the possibility to play the maps created by the community. It is a very fun and almost unlimited mode where we will earn talent points and money.
Optimized graphics
Ubisoft has managed to give Far Cry 5 a very good graphic quality, as expected of them. They have always been at the forefront when it comes to gaming set in forest, exotic and rural settings. On this occasion , the leafy vegetation is seen in both low and high quality. The care taken in the details, textures and shades is appreciated. But even more so, you can see a very good job when it comes to optimization.
With a GTX 970 it has been possible to play with the graphics options to the fullest and run the game smoothly. Therefore, in high-end equipment with more powerful graphics, fluidity and high FPS will be the constant trend.
The water, the characters, the effects of fires, shots and the beautiful fireworks when bombing an enemy base perform at a very good level . The only downside is that they have put more details in the visual than in the details of the game. There are comparisons of this game with Far Cry 2 and many details have been lost. The trees when burning do not lose their leaves, the bushes do not move or break when one passes over them, nor are there rainy days. It's a shame, but you can't have everything by sight.
The audio of the game could not be less either. The sound effects of weapons, the environment or the wind are very successful. They have done a good job with the soundtrack and songs that play during the game and that are the icing on the cake to immerse us in deep america.
Far Cry 5 conclusion and final words
It shows how in all these years the saga has been improving and refining many of its aspects. The gameplay in this Far Cry 5 is impeccable and the use of weapons and vehicles is one of the best. The weapons have their own weight and the vehicles are handled very comfortably. The theme of doing the missions and the story in a free way is a great success and gives a touch of realism to the game, as I said before, although it takes the story's immersion. However, each person will value positively or negatively the fact of not having a protagonist per se with their own history and idiosyncrasy. The villain, on the other hand, if he stands out and is charismatic.
On the other hand, we find repeated missions and others more varied and fun. We are facing a shooter so, although it is true that you can play in stealth mode or using allies, in the end you almost always end up using shots. Graphics and sound scratch at a very good level. It is a pity that for them they have dispensed with some details from previous games. The best thing is that after finishing the story mode you can continue enjoying the game with the extra content. As are the collectibles, the cooperative mode and the multiplayer Arcade mode.
Currently we find it in online stores for a price of 55.90 euros.
