Today we are going to deal with another of the most common errors that occur in Windows. This is the error in the User Profile Service, which usually occurs when upgrading from previous operating system versions such as from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or Windows 8 to Windows 10.

Index of contents

Due to this failure, trying to log in with a user account will give us an error with the message “ Error in the user profile service when logging in. Unable to load user profile

This usually happens when, after an update, we try to enter the system with our user, or we create a new user and this error appears in the new user when trying to enter with the account.

Solution 1: Start in safe mode

This method can be done when we cannot log in with any user account. If we are located on the lock screen of our computer, it is possible to start Windows in safe mode.

In this solution, all we have to do is try to start Windows in safe mode and try to enter the system with our user. If this action is successful we will restart the computer and try to log in normally to the computer. We see the steps to follow:

  • On the system lock screen we press the " Shift " key on our keyboard, at the same time we click on the button to turn off the system and on the option " Restart ". If we do this process, a blue screen will be shown. We choose " Solve problems "

  • Then " Advanced Options " And finally in the " Startup Settings " option

  • A window will appear indicating us what we can do by activating this option. We click on " Restart "

  • The computer will reboot and a menu will appear to enter Windows Safe mode. Press number 5 to enter the mode with network functions.

Now the team will start and we will try again to enter our username and password. If you have not given us the error, we will try to restart the computer and enter normally to see if the error has been fixed

Method 2: using command prompt

Another option we have is to try to scan the system files and try to restore them with the commands that Windows makes available to us.

We can do this from an installation DVD or USB or directly from Windows If we have access to a user account that works correctly

From Windows

  • Click on the start menu and write " CMD " On the search result right click and choose " Run as administrator "

Now we must put the following command and then press Enter to execute it:

sfc / scannow

  • We let it run and then we put the following:

    Dism.exe / online / Cleanup-Image / StartComponentCleanup And later:

    dism / online / cleanup-image / restorehealth

Again we test if the error has been solved by restarting the computer

Method 3: Restoring User Box “Default”

If your error is that you cannot create new users on the computer, but you do have the possibility to log in with yours, it is possible that the error is due to the user's “ Default ” folder being corrupted.

In this case what we must do is change it for another correct one. We see how we should do this:

  • We enter a user in our system and open the folder explorer. Click on the option of the toolbar " View " Activate " Hidden elements "

  • Next, we go to the C: drive and enter the “ Users ” folder. There the “ Default ” folder should appear in hidden mode.

What we will have to do is delete this folder or rename it as Default.old and paste a folder that we know is correct. To do that we must take the default folder from another computer or download one that is correct from this link.

We recommend taking it from another computer.

Method 4: Restore Factory Equipment

Following the same steps as in method 1 and 2 we open the system recovery options from the lock screen

  • Now we must select " Reset this computer "

  • Then we can choose " keep my files " or " Remove all ". We can test in principle keeping our files and run Windows restore.

The restoration process will begin

If the error persists, we will install a clean copy of the system.

Method 5: Reinstall a Clean Copy of the System

We will also have the opportunity to install a clean copy of the system and forget about the above.

Please note that if you have a Windows 8 or earlier license, this process will possibly invalidate the possibility of using this license.

Also, you will be able to recover your files from the Windows.old folder when you install.
