G.Skill is a leading brand known mainly for being one of the best manufacturers of RAM memory modules, although it also has a considerable catalog of gaming peripherals. Among its catalog of headphones we find the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910, some circumaural helmets with a USB connector, these helmets are mainly characterized by offering real 7.1 sound thanks to the presence of a total of 10 drivers. They also include an integrated microphone, a complete control knob and a red lighting system to give them a much more attractive appearance.
G.Skill Ripjaws SR910: technical characteristics
G.Skill Ripjaws SR910: unboxing and product analysis
The G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 are offered in a cardboard box in which the color black predominates although red is also present. It is a large box, much larger than what we are used to seeing in this type of product. On the front we find an image in which an earphone with its LED lighting system is seen, as well as some of the main characteristics of these helmets such as its real 7.1 sound system thanks to the inclusion of 10 drivers, thanks to which we have 7.1 sound much more accurate and reliable than other virtual systems. Also highlighted is its noise-canceling microphone, a very complete control knob and great comfort provided by its pads.
In the back, we offer its main features a little more detailed along with an image in which the helmets are seen in full, including its large control knob that allows us to adjust the volume of each channel in a very final way.. On the left side we see a window that occupies part of the front and that will serve to appreciate details of the helmets before going through the box. Already on the left side we see another small window in which we can see the remote control.
We open the box and in addition to the helmets themselves, we have a small brochure that corresponds to the warranty and a quick start guide that is in several languages, including Spanish.
We are already focused on the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 themselves and we got a very good first impression. We have a design in which the color black predominates, but there are also some touches of red, the design is not as aggressive as we have seen in other helmets and in its favor it must be said that it looks very solid and robust, we have seen helmets much more expensive with a more fragile appearance so we congratulate the brand for having manufactured a product that shows a lot of quality in all its aspects.
The G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 are built with plastic and metal as the predominant materials, the first is the most abundant and it must be said that it transmits a high quality feeling and helps to achieve a much lighter product than if it had been abused of metal, these helmets have a weight of 420 grams, a somewhat high figure but within the acceptable and expected in a product like this.
We have a traditional headband design that punctures the helmets from above, achieving remarkable closing pressure on the pads, which offers quite good insulation from outside noise. Beneath the headband is a faux fur upper strap with two elastic ends, covering the entire upper head path. This tape is padded to offer great comfort to the user during use, G.Skill has spared no effort and despite being a very flexible tape, it has not cut comfort.
Now we look at the headphones area and we see a simple design, but at the same time very attractive and above all it looks very very robust. These are attached to the headband in such a way that a rotation of 180º is allowed to adapt better to the user and improve their comfort during long sessions of use, let's not forget that the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 are helmets intended mainly for players and these they usually spend many hours in front of their PC. The outer face of the headphones area is formed by a transparent window thanks to which we can see in full detail the 5 drivers that have been included in each of the headphones, let's not lose sight of the fact that the real 7.1 sound is the main one attractiveness of these helmets so G.Skill has ensured that the user does not miss a single detail about it. This area also includes the red lighting system that includes the brand's logo and we can see it perfectly from the window. We really want to see it illuminated!
We continue talking about the area of the headphones, and that is that as we have said inside, there are neodymium speakers capable of providing real 7.1 surround sound that is supported by Xear 3D technology, equalization and several additional parameters that we can configure from the software and involved in the final quality of the generated sound. The speakers have cushions finished in synthetic leather and with a very abundant and soft padding that provides great comfort and will make it a delight to wear helmets during long sessions.
In the left earpiece we find the cable and a retractable microphone in a very simple way so it will not bother us when we are not using it. It is an omni-directional microphone with noise cancellation technology that will allow us to communicate with our colleagues in a very comfortable way during our favorite games. This microphone has an impedance of 2.2 KOhm, a frequency range of 50-10, 000 Hz and a sensitivity of 36 ± 3 dB.
We now look at the cable of the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 and we see that it is covered with black rubber to increase its durability thus avoiding it from being easily damaged. In the cable we find a complete control knob made of black plastic and metal that includes two buttons that are used to activate / deactivate the microphone and change the channel on which we want to modify the volume (main, front, rear, cir, side and sub). The remote also includes a large wheel that we will use to modify the volume of the selected channel, this wheel is made of metal and has a fairly long range, so we will have very fine control over the volume of the headphones.
Cmedia management software for Windows
The G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 and its complete management software make use of Cmedia and its Xear3D digital processing technology, in case it does not sound like it, it is a technology that rivals Dolby and is capable of achieving excellent results at a much more competitive cost. Thanks to the use of this technology, 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound is obtained and it is also capable of providing greater stereo presence in 2.0 sources. It is very important that we install the application to be able to use Cmedia and Xear 3D under Windows since without them the helmets lose a lot of charm.
The software can be downloaded from the G.Skill official website. Once downloaded, its installation is extremely simple since we only need to click next until reaching the end.
Once the software is installed we open it and see that it is fully translated into Spanish, which is great. The application remains in the background and is accessible from the Hiditec icon in the system tray. Once we open the application we see that it is clearly divided into two sections: on the left side we have all the controls regarding the volume of the speakers and the microphone and the 10-band equalizer, ranging from 30 Hz to 16 KHz and with a level range of -20 dB to + 20 dB in each band. Along with the equalizer we find various profiles of environments and preset music types.
On the left side we have a window with a total of 5 tabs that refer to different speaker and microphone adjustment sections:
- Speaker Settings to set the sound as stereo, quad, 5.1 Surround or 7.1 Surround. Speaker Shifter to enable 7.1 audio transformation and adjust the volume level of all eight channels. Flex Bass II to control the cutoff frequency and bass level. Xear Sing FX for speakers with key change adjustment and vocal fade. Xear Sing FX for the microphone with echo management and magic voice.
Final words and conclusion
After several days using the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 we can now offer you the most realistic evaluation of the product possible. The first impression you get when you see the helmets for the first time is very positive, something that is reaffirmed every time you wear them since it is a product with a very good and very solid build quality. Let's not forget that these are quite cheap headphones for what we usually see in the market and G.Skill has been able to install a real 7.1 sound subsystem that works really well and offers excellent sound in both treble and bass.
The advantages over a virtual 7.1 audio system seem quite clear, we have a much more precise operation and it is something that can be verified immediately when you immerse yourself in the middle of a video game compatible with multichannel sound. I have used them to play, listen to music and watch videos and the result has been very good in all scenarios with a loud and clear sound, the sound they are capable of offering is high, very loud, so there is no problem in this regard. In fact, with an average volume level it is more than enough and it can even be annoying forcing it to be lowered slightly, which shows its great power and that they are superfluous in this regard . The software allows us to deactivate virtual surround sound and leave them as stereo headphones, something that can be convenient if we are going to listen to music, for example.
The comfort of the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 is excellent, its padded headband and its large, dense and soft pads are a delight and make you forget that you wear the helmets on your head. If the sound is at a high level, I dare say that the comfort is even better
Finally, the microphone offers the expected performance in a product like this, it will help us to communicate perfectly with our friends, but as it is always below the quality of the speakers and this time it is also true, we have a very correct microphone but that does not stand out, really nothing to object because we remember once again that we are facing one economic gaming helmets.
As a final conclusion we can say that the G.Skill Ripjaws SR910 are an excellent option if you want to buy high quality helmets, very comfortable and with real 7.1 surround sound, for an approximate price of 73 euros they offer us excellent sound, an attractive design and comfortable and a microphone that perfectly fulfills its mission. It is not easy to make such an attractive product amid so much competition in the market for PC helmets.
