One of the great virtues of Nvidia's Pascal architecture is its ability to achieve high clock frequencies in the GPU and thereby increase its performance. A new demonstration of this capacity comes with the GALAX GTX 1080 HOF (KFA2 in Europe) reaching 2.5 GHz.

GALAX KFA 2 GTX 1080 HOF (KFA2 GTX 1080 HOF) at 2.5 GHz with liquid nitrogen and 2.2 GHz by air

According to Mad Tse, the fact that the GeForce GTX 1080 reference model has only an 8-pin power connector is not a major limitation on the card's overclocking potential. The limitation is actually found in the components used in the manufacture of the PCB and in a BIOS that does not allow the voltage to be raised beyond 1.25V.

The KFA2 GTX 1080 HOF (KFA2 in Europe) has been able to achieve a voltage of 1.3V and thus an operating frequency on its 2.5GHz Pascal GP104 GPU. For this, the use of liquid nitrogen has been essential to prevent the entire card from turning into a fireball. Jokes aside, the KFA2GTX 1080 HOF has also been able to reach 2.2 GHz over the air without extreme modifications thus demonstrating once again Pascal's great overclocking capabilities.

Before you get your hopes up, the GTX 1080 HOF has a special BIOS with voltage unlocked, something manufacturers can't implement without Nvidia's permission so there's no telling if you'll be able to beat 2GHz when you buy your new GeForce GTX 1080 custom.
