Whenever Intel released a new top-of-the-range CPU most consumers wonder how far it can go, der8auer, one of the world's most famous professional overclockers, has managed to overclock an Intel Core i9 7980XE processor up to 6.1 GHz using liquid nitrogen.

Intel Core i9 7980XE reaches a consumption of 1000W

To achieve this, the overclocker has needed to use some unusual cooling methods while using the 18-core giant from Intel, it has been necessary to cover the CPU array and most of the CPU substrate with thermal paste to dissipate additional heat.

Intel Core i9-7980XE: First Online Analysis

Even under LN2 cooling, the 7980XE has reached temperatures that were above 0 degrees Celsius under load, an extremely hot temperature given normal LN2 characteristics at -180ÂșC. If the temperature is impressive, so is the power consumption with the Intel Core i9 7980XE drinking 1000W by itself.

Using this CPU with a lighter 5.6GHz overclock, der8auer scored 257 and 5635 on Cinebench R15 in its single-threaded and multithreaded tests respectively. Der8auer later paired the processor with a LN2-cooled Nvidia Titan Xp GPU at a core speed of 2455MHz to achieve 45, 705 points in 3DMark 11, 35, 782 points in 3DMARK Fire Strike and 120, 425 points in 3DMark Vantage.
