Unboxing and design

The Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 9 is packed in a large cardboard box, where a black background predominates along with the screen printing of the product in large letters. In the lower right corner we see the great variety of certifications that endorses it.

Once we turn the box, we find the back of it. In it we find detailed the main most important technical characteristics of the motherboard.

From our point of view, it is an excellent staging so that the user is informed of all the characteristics of the product before going through the box (if you buy it in a physical store).

The Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 9 is an E-ATX format motherboard with dimensions of 30.5 cm x 26.4 cm for the LGA 1151 socket. We are in front of the brand's flagship, where we see a sublime design and full of details.

Its aesthetic is overwhelming, combining the design features of the Aorus series in this new platform together with a liquid cooling block that we will see in detail during the analysis. The PCB is black and combines great with the other components. Do you like this motherboard as much as we do?

The motherboard is designed in two zones with cooling: the most important for the power phases and the second for the Z170 chipset. It has nothing more and nothing less than 20 phases of power supported by Ultra Durable technology and Nichicon top of the range capacitors. What does all this set of technologies do? offers us the best experience, durability and overclocking possibilities on a high-end board.

Unlike other Gigabyte boards, the Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 9 incorporates a block manufactured by EK that allows cooling both passively and with liquid (we must install liquid cooling) with a great result. If we look at previous generations, the evolutionary change is evident and this block can be perfectly valued at around 100 euros.

It also incorporates hybrid connectors. What does this mean? Basically, the fan heads are fully compatible with normal cooling (heatsink, fans) such as a pump for liquid part cooling (D5 or DDC) or compact liquid cooling.

Finally and as we always show you, a detailed image of the 8-pin EPS connection.

Thanks to the 4 DDR4 RAM sockets it allows us to install a total of 64 GB with frequencies of up to 4000 Mhz and compatible with the XMP 2.0 profile. Along with the slots, we see double USB 3.0 connection heads, the control panel (Power buttons, overclock, echo…), two DEBUG LEDs, fan heads and BIOS erase.

The Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 9 has a layout that stands out from the rest, since it allows us to connect four Nvidia graphics cards in SLI and AMD in CrossFireX. Along with the 4 PCI Express x16 connections, it is accompanied by two PCI Express x1 connections to expand the equipment with a video capture device or a disk controller for greater storage support.

All thanks to a PLX chip that allows you to connect the 4 cards with speeds of x16, x8, x16, x8.

Nor can we forget the incorporation of Ultra Durable PCIe Armor technology that is responsible for reinforcing the PCI-Express ports so that they can support without any problem the most powerful and heavy graphics cards on the market.

There is also the Double Locking Bracket that provides a better grip of the cards for a more optimal operation. Anti-Sulfur Resistor Design and Ultra Durable Memory Armor technologies protect all major electronic components and DDR4 DIMMM slots from wear and tear so they last like new for much longer.

It is also important to know that it incorporates two slots for the M.2 connection and thus install any disk of this format and type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (42/60/80 and 110mm). Which allows us to connect together with the U.2 Slot connections and get the maximum possible bandwidth on this motherboard.

It incorporates a Creative Sound Core3D sound card that combines Creative's advanced quad-core audio processor with powerful Creative SBX Pro StudioTM Audio Suite software. With this you can modify many parameters and all the work related to sound processing is downloaded to the CPU to improve the overall performance of the system.

The SBX Pro Studio suite audio technology will provide you with a new level of sound immersion so that you can enjoy all your favorite multimedia content and, of course, games like never before. Creative's specific algorithms allow users to feel specific sounds in the middle of the battlefield.

To check the stability of the i7-7700k processor at 4500 MHZ (stock values) and the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and air cooling. The graphics that we have used is an Nvidia GTX 1080, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1920 x 1080 monitor. In terms of overclocking we have managed to set it to 5 GHz but the voltage and temperatures shot up with any benchmark, processor problem and its poor sealing.

BIOS

Gigabyte brings the best BIOS we've tested to date. It allows us to optimize any manageable component, also modify lighting effects, perform fully stable overclocking and in our language, Spanish.

We quite liked that from its software in Windows it allows us to activate an overclock option and leave the processor to a 4700 MHz overclock without touching anything. This is ideal for people who do not know how to overclock and makes your life a lot easier. Although in our case we have reached the 5 GHz barrier with the motherboard. Nothing bad!

The Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 9 is an E-ATX format motherboard designed for the most food-minded users of computing. Its design is sublime, its 20 power phases make you fall in love as soon as you see them, its EK block is a delight to the eye and its overclocking ability is incredible.

It incorporates some creatives that rarely meet on a motherboard: Creative Sound Core 3D sound card, AMP-UP both in the rear and front, compatibility with 4 WAY SLI (Thanks to the PLX chip), dual Killer E12500 network card and a large repertoire of USB 3.1 connections.

Regarding storage, it has two U.2 Slot connections, two M.2 NVMe connections and 8 SATA connections (compatible with a Dual SATA Express that is not currently widely used). If you add to all this its 8 RGB lighting zones, it becomes one of the most interesting (and expensive) motherboards on the market.

In our tests we have managed to scratch up to 5000 MHz to the i7-7700k that Gigabyte left us for its review. The voltage is much better than expected (the phases and the components help), although all the tests we pass with a stock frequency (4500 MHz) to make everything much more realistic.

Its price in store is 610 euros and its availability is immediate. We believe that this is a motherboard for very determined users and that the rest of the mortals will suffice with the Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 5, but if you want to indulge yourself… you have our blessing.
