Unboxing and design

Gigabyte maintains the presentation format than other generations of graphics cards. A cover with the company logo, the name of the name in large size and the image of the hawk eye so characteristic on its packaging. In the back, the company details all the benefits of its new GPU.

Once we open the box we come across the following bundle inside:

  • Graphics card Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti GAMING OC Quick guide CD with drivers and software.

The Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti GAMING OC is a very well built GPU that offers a pleasing impression when we first meet it. It can be seen that Gigabyte has put a lot of care into its creation and quality components are seen first.

Impressive that Gigabyte opts for mounting a triple fan heatsink for a mid-range graphics card. Specifically, it assembles the new WINDFORCE 3X, which has done so well in its high range of previous generations.

This features three 80mm 3D fans and their alternative spas to improve air flow. With this system we ensure very low temperatures and great performance at maximum power.

At the construction level we will find Ultra Durable components, an exclusive heatsink for the phases and the MOSFETs of the motherboard and the plastic housing where the fans are integrated.

The graphics card has the " Alternate Spinning " technology that improves air flow thanks How is this done? GIGABYTE chooses that the fans on both sides go in the same direction, but the center one goes in the opposite direction. This reduces turbulence and increases the pressure of the air flow. Quite a hit on paper, but how will it work on this GTX 1660 Ti?

On the back of the card we can see a plastic backplate. So its function is merely decorative, and this seems to us a success and an error at the same time. Normally, the backplate serves to give firmness, improve temperatures with thermalpads and improve the aesthetics of our dedicated card .

Not only is Gigabyte offering this type of backplate, but there are other companies that do, with their entry-level models. Hopefully it is a sporadic trend and does not become a standard in all graphics card assemblers. Since the experience and functionality is different from that of a brushed metal or aluminum sheet.

Again NVIDIA takes away the opportunity to mount an SLI or NVLink in this generation and we can only mount it in the high range. This card comes to replace the 6 GB GTX 1060 and has its consistency that maintains this restriction.

Surely, with the possibility of this port, we would see more dual graphics card configurations on more modest computers.

Finally, we stop at the rear connections of the motherboard, we come across:

  • Three standard DisplayPort 1.4 connections with a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz One HDMI 2.0b connection

Heatsink and PCB

We really liked that Gigabyte opts for a fully customized PCB. To remove the heatsink, we only have to remove a total of 6 screws, and we can see that it has 3 copper heatpipes and four areas covered by a thermalad pad for memories, VRM and MOSFET. In this way, all components will be refrigerated.

At the power level we only have a 6-pin socket. Remember that the graphics card has only 120 W of TDP and compared to the previous generation, it consumes a third less.

Gigabyte has chosen 4 + 2 power phases to support the Turing architecture TU116 chipset manufactured in 12nm FinFET. Base we have a speed of 1500 MHz that rises from stock with turbo to an interesting 1860 MHz.

This GPU has 1, 536 CUDA Cores, 96 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. Logically we do not have the benefits of Ray Tracing technology or AI powered DLSS. It is complemented by a total of 6 GB of GDDR6 memory with a bandwidth of 12 Gbps. These modules have a 192-bit bus width, and a bandwidth of 288.1 GB / s.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. In this way we test the three most popular resolutions in the gaming landscape.

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We have been able to overclock the core up to 1600 MHz and the memories up to about 1688 MHz. It has allowed us to get the same performance as other "higher-end" GTX 1660 Ti. So, once again, it is shown that if you have a good chip and you have good cooling, you can take it to the maximum of its possibilities. We have compared the performance offered with and without overclocking with the Shadow of the Tomb Raider game

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider - DX12 Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti Stock Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 86 FPS 97 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 61 FPS 66 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 35 FPS 38 FPS

Temperature and consumption

As expected, its temperatures are very good. At rest we have 47 ºC on average because the fans are stopped, but if you do not like the "semi-passive" mode you can create your own curve to have a very cool graph, since the fans are very quiet. It has also grown to maximum power with an average temperature of 62 ºC.

As usual in our temperature tests, we have passed our FLIR PRO high definition camera. With this test we can see the hottest spots after 12 hours of stress. Very good work by Gigabyte.

Consumption is for the entire team *

The consumption of this graphics card is very low. We have 50 W at rest while at full load it goes up to 207 W. If we stress the processor 100% for several hours, we have an average of 319 W.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti GAMING

Once again Gigabyte shows everyone that with a product with a moderate price it can give the same war as another one of a higher range. The Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti GAMING perfectly defines the previous sentence.

With its new TU116 Chip of the Turing architecture and its 14 nm, the 6 GB of GDDR5 memory of this series, a high-performance WINDFORCE X3 heatsink and a good overclocking capacity, form excellent characteristics as a cover letter.

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

At the performance level we have seen that in Full HD and 2K it is totally left over. But if you have a 4K monitor you can play + 30 FPS in the main games on the market. We believe that it is undoubtedly a great quality / price graphics card.

In temperatures and consumption we have finished very happy with the results obtained. Having the “ Alternate Spinning ” system that improves air flow and temperatures and the semi-passive mode of its fans are great features to keep in mind.

The only downside is that it does not incorporate an aluminum backplate. The plastic one makes us lose a bit of the premium product experience and does not give us the plus of reinforcement and better cooling. Its price in Spanish stores is 334.90 euros. We think it is worth it, regarding lower models with 1 or 2 fans? What do you think of this model?
