The Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC has come to us, a more affordable variant without the Gaming surname in its title. Instead we have a dual -fan WINDFORCE heatsink instead of 3, and performance almost on par with 1800 MHz overclocking instead of the 1860 MHz from the Gaming OC. The range of personalized cards is expanded to reach all public friends, let's see what this new creation offers us.

We thank the Gigabyte for the assignment of this GPU and its trust in us to carry out this analysis.

Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC technical features

Unboxing and design

Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC is a graphics card that aims to give the best of the "gaming" version in terms of power, but with a more reasonable price, installing a slightly more basic dual-fan WINDFORCE heatsink and a little less overclocking. We know that it is one of the most desired cards for mid-range users, close to the RTX 2060 and a very competitive price, with permission from the 1660.

The gigabyte mechanical eye makes an appearance again, increasingly detailed and impressive. The presentation is practically the same as its older sister the Gaming OC 6G, in short, it is Gigabyte.

In the back area we find more or less the usual, a photo of the card, rather, its heatsink and an explanation of its benefits and features. Nor can a description be missing from the technical sheet of the equipment.

This box is made up of thick cardboard panels that are responsible for protecting the entire interior, where the graphics card is located, wrapped in an antistatic plastic bag and in turn in a well-padded mold.

We open this box in the traditional way up and we will find few accessories, if not none. In addition to the Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC we will have a CD-ROM with the software and drivers, which we recommend not to use and download the latest version of this on the Nvidia page and the software on the Gigabyte page, and also a guide of user.

No trace of cables, as is already usual in all GPUs.

The external appearance clearly follows the continuity in design with respect to the Gaming OC, although in this case we only have two fans and, therefore, a somewhat smaller card and ideal for teams with micro-ATX towers. An aluminum block and a copper heatpipe, along with its thick and hard plastic casing, are appreciated, so the build quality is the same as the top model.

Surely this heatsink configuration goes more with the range in which the card is located, then we will carry out the disassembly to see its interior. In this case, it is a WINDFORCE 2X that gives the Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC total measurements of 225 mm long, 122 mm wide and 40 mm thick, occupying only two expansion slots.

On top of the aluminum block we have two 90mm 3D fans, note that the diameter increases compared to the Gaming OC, which had 80mm fans. The configuration maintains alternate operation, that is, the fans rotate in the opposite direction to generate an improved air flow that allows much better heat dissipation.

We see some really worked blades with aerodynamic appendages in the upper area to increase air flow while reducing noise. As in other cases, at low temperatures these fans will remain stopped and totally silent.

In the rear or upper zone Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC has a complete backplate installed and that also covers the front of the card to improve the final exterior appearance. Its construction is based on hard plastic of very good quality and rigidity, we must say, although never reaching the level of one of aluminum.

You have to reduce costs to have a competitive product, anyway, since it is a much lighter card, an aluminum backplate is not essential, because the deformation will be minimal.

We will take advantage of this close-up to see how we will only need an 8-pin power connector to give enough power to this 120 W TDP card. At this point we have no doubts about the energy efficiency of the Turing architecture and we see this same configuration in other 1660 Ti and even in the most modest RTX 2060.

We see the Gigabyte logo reflected on its side, and in this case we must say that it does not have RGB Fusion lighting, so we do not expect it to light up.

Also not a secret is the absence of the SLI or NVLink bridge connectors on these mid-range cards. Neither does the RTX 2060 and 2070 have it. Nvidia has maintained this functionality only on the select group of top of the range cards.

We understand the purpose, but, although of these mid-range units with NVLink we believe that it would have been an excellent option for advanced configurations without spending figures that comfortably exceed 1000 euros.

We do not forget the connectivity of this Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC, although in this case we repeat regarding the Gaming version, to have three DisplayPort 1.4 ports and an HDMI 2.0b port.

Be careful here, because it is not DisplayPort 1.4a, and these only offer us a maximum resolution of 4096x2160p @ 60Hz, while HDMI does offer us a resolution of 7680x4320p @ 60 Hz. It is clear that this card will not be able to move any game to more than 60 Hz in 4K, but if it were the case that we had an 8K monitor, we will have to connect it to the HDMI.

We really like this presentation of the Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC, a card that never gives up on the quality of materials despite being a mid-range. With a very elaborate design and a nice final appearance for users who want to wear it in addition to something cheap.

Heatsink and PCB

The heatsink removal system of this Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC is the same as that of the top sister, that is, removing 6 screws and carefully separating PCB from the aluminum and copper block. In this case, we only find a single copper heatpipe that passes just above the GPU and sends the heat to the sides of the block completely made of aluminum, which is built in a single block.

This heatsink is much more basic than that of the gaming version, and we will see how far its cooling power can go.

Being an overclocked product as standard, and with even more performance capacity if we ask for an extra, Gigabyte wanted to introduce a good 4 + 2 phase VRM MOSFET power supply with protection against high temperatures and also in direct contact with the control block. aluminum to preserve your safety.

Surely you all already know the technical properties of the GPU and memory of this GTX 1660 Ti, but they should be remembered. We then have a Turing architecture graphics processor with the name TU116 with a manufacturing process at 12 nm FinFET. Base we have a clock frequency of 1500 MHz, capable of going up to 1800 MHz, 60 MHz less than the Gaming version.

This GPU has 1536 CUDA Cores, 96 TMUs (texture units) and 48 ROPs (rendering units). Logically we don't have the benefits of Ray Tracing technology or AI powered DLSS for now. It is complemented by a total of 6 GB of GDDR6 memory with a bandwidth of 12 Gbps. These modules have a 192-bit bus width, and a bandwidth of 288.1 GB / s.

We say for now, because Nvidia has communicated in a recent news at the GDC 2019 that it will implement in its new April drivers the processing of ray traces in real time for all graphics cards with Turing and Pascal architecture. ray tracing will run on available cores and performance is expected to be 2-3 times lower than RTX. We will soon see tests that certify these results.

This gives a renewed life to the cards of the previous architecture, although of course with the obvious limitations.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, and the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers. The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

We have obtained 46ºC at rest because the fans are off until they reach 60 degrees . Once the fans are started at full load, we obtain an average of 61 ºC. While overclocked, temperatures rise to around 69 ºC on average.

Consumption is for the entire team *

The consumption of the equipment is 50 W which when we upload the work to the GPU amounts to 233 W. Although if we stress the processor we get approximately 322 W. With overclock we go up to 368 W.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC

After testing the Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC we concluded that it is one of the best graphics cards in the mid-range on the market. A solvent design, a compact format that can be installed in any chassis, good cooling and its overclocking capacity is very similar to that of higher models.

At the performance level we have been able to play the main games in Full HD and WQHD. This graphics card is not focused on 4K, to have a good experience we must opt for the Nvidia flagships.

As we have been able to check the temperatures and consumption are excellent. We can't fault this dual-fan Windforce heatsink. We are very pleased with the performance Gigabyte has delivered in this new series.

The only downside is that the backplate is plastic. This design leaves us with a bad taste in the mouth, since it does not allow us to get the benefits of the metal backplate: extra cooling and greater firmness.

Its price is currently 315 euros. Without a doubt, it is a very interesting price for a model that we know will offer us great performance. Although for a few euros more we have the triple fan version or higher range. What do you think of this new Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti OC? We want to know your opinion!
